Improving his mind,\r\npoor fellow! But what’s that he says now—hist!”\r\n\r\n“I look, you look, he looks; we look, ye look, they look.”\r\n\r\n“Why, he’s getting it by heart—hist! again.”\r\n\r\n“I look, you look, he looks; we look, ye look, they look.”\r\n\r\n“Well, that’s funny.”\r\n\r\n“And I, you, and he; and we, ye, and they, are all bats; and I’m a\r\ncrow, especially when I stand a’top of this pine tree here. Caw! caw!\r\ncaw! caw! caw! caw! Ain’t I a crow? And where’s the scare-crow? There\r\nhe stands; two bones stuck into a pair of old trowsers, and two more\r\npoked into the sleeves of an old jacket.”\r\n\r\n“Wonder if he means me?—complimentary!—poor lad!—I could go hang\r\nmyself. Any way, for the present, I’ll quit Pip’s vicinity. I can stand\r\nthe rest, for they have plain wits; but he’s too crazy-witty for my\r\nsanity. So, so, I leave him muttering.”\r\n\r\n“Here’s the ship’s navel, this doubloon here, and they are all on fire\r\nto unscrew it. But, unscrew your navel, and what’s the consequence?\r\nThen again, if it stays here, that is ugly, too, for when aught’s\r\nnailed to the mast it’s a sign that things grow desperate. Ha, ha! old\r\nAhab! the White Whale; he’ll nail ye! This is a pine tree. My father,\r\nin old Tolland county, cut down a pine tree once, and found a silver\r\nring grown over in it; some old darkey’s wedding ring. How did it get\r\nthere? And so they’ll say in the resurrection, when they come to fish\r\nup this old mast, and find a doubloon lodged in it, with bedded oysters\r\nfor the shaggy bark. Oh, the gold! the precious, precious, gold! the\r\ngreen miser’ll hoard ye soon! Hish! hish! God goes ’mong the worlds\r\nblackberrying. Cook! ho, cook! and cook us! Jenny! hey, hey, hey, hey,\r\nhey, Jenny, Jenny! and get your hoe-cake done!”\r\n\r\n\r\nCHAPTER 100. Leg and Arm.\r\n\r\nThe Pequod, of Nantucket, Meets the Samuel Enderby, of London.\r\n\r\n“Ship, ahoy! Hast seen the White Whale?”\r\n\r\nSo cried Ahab, once more hailing a ship showing English colours,\r\nbearing down under the stern. Trumpet to mouth, the old man was\r\nstanding in his hoisted quarter-boat, his ivory leg plainly revealed to\r\nthe stranger captain, who was carelessly reclining in his own boat’s\r\nbow. He was a darkly-tanned, burly, good-natured, fine-looking man, of\r\nsixty or thereabouts, dressed in a spacious roundabout, that hung round\r\nhim in festoons of blue pilot-cloth; and one empty arm of this jacket\r\nstreamed behind him like the broidered arm of a hussar’s surcoat.\r\n\r\n“Hast seen the White Whale?”\r\n\r\n“See you this?” and withdrawing it from the folds that had hidden it,\r\nhe held up a white arm of sperm whale bone, terminating in a wooden\r\nhead like a mallet.\r\n\r\n“Man my boat!” cried Ahab, impetuously, and tossing about the oars near\r\nhim—“Stand by to lower!”\r\n\r\nIn less than a minute, without quitting his little craft, he and his\r\ncrew were dropped to the water, and were soon alongside of the\r\nstranger. But here a curious difficulty presented itself. In the\r\nexcitement of the moment, Ahab had forgotten that since the loss of his\r\nleg he had never once stepped on board of any vessel at sea but his\r\nown, and then it was always by an ingenious and very handy mechanical\r\ncontrivance peculiar to the Pequod, and a thing not to be rigged and\r\nshipped in any other vessel at a moment’s warning. Now, it is no very\r\neasy matter for anybody—except those who are almost hourly used to it,\r\nlike whalemen—to clamber up a ship’s side from a boat on the open sea;\r\nfor the great swells now lift the boat high up towards the bulwarks,\r\nand then instantaneously drop it half way down to the kelson. So,\r\ndeprived of one leg, and the strange ship of course being altogether\r\nunsupplied with the kindly invention, Ahab now found himself abjectly\r\nreduced to a clumsy landsman again; hopelessly eyeing the uncertain\r\nchangeful height he could hardly hope to attain.\r\n\r\nIt has before been hinted, perhaps, that every little untoward\r\ncircumstance that befell him, and which indirectly sprang from his\r\nluckless mishap, almost invariably irritated or exasperated Ahab. And\r\nin the present instance, all this was heightened by the sight of the\r\ntwo officers of the strange ship, leaning over the side, by the\r\nperpendicular ladder of nailed cleets there, and swinging towards him a\r\npair of tastefully-ornamented man-ropes; for at first they did not seem\r\nto bethink them that a one-legged man must be too much of a cripple to\r\nuse their sea bannisters. But this awkwardness only lasted a minute,\r\nbecause the strange captain, observing at a glance how affairs stood,\r\ncried out, “I see, I see!—avast heaving there! Jump, boys, and swing\r\nover the cutting-tackle.”\r\n\r\nAs good luck would have it, they had had a whale alongside a day or two\r\nprevious, and the great tackles were still aloft, and the massive\r\ncurved blubber-hook, now clean and dry, was still attached to the end.\r\nThis was quickly lowered to Ahab, who at once comprehending it all,\r\nslid his solitary thigh into the curve of the hook (it was like sitting\r\nin the fluke of an anchor, or the crotch of an apple tree), and then\r\ngiving the word, held himself fast, and at the same time also helped to\r\nhoist his own weight, by pulling hand-over-hand upon one of the running\r\nparts of the tackle. Soon he was carefully swung inside the high\r\nbulwarks, and gently landed upon the capstan head. With his ivory arm\r\nfrankly thrust forth in welcome, the other captain advanced, and Ahab,\r\nputting out his ivory leg, and crossing the ivory arm (like two\r\nsword-fish blades) cried out in his walrus way, “Aye, aye, hearty! let\r\nus shake bones together!—an arm and a leg!—an arm that never can\r\nshrink, d’ye see; and a leg that never can run. Where did’st thou see\r\nthe White Whale?—how long ago?”\r\n\r\n“The White Whale,” said the Englishman, pointing his ivory arm towards\r\nthe East, and taking a rueful sight along it, as if it had been a\r\ntelescope; “there I saw him, on the Line, last season.”\r\n\r\n“And he took that arm off, did he?” asked Ahab, now sliding down from\r\nthe capstan, and resting on the Englishman’s shoulder, as he did so.\r\n\r\n“Aye, he was the cause of it, at least; and that leg, too?”\r\n\r\n“Spin me the yarn,” said Ahab; “how was it?”\r\n\r\n“It was the first time in my life that I ever cruised on the Line,”\r\nbegan the Englishman. “I was ignorant of the White Whale at that time.\r\nWell, one day we lowered for a pod of four or five whales, and my boat\r\nfastened to one of them; a regular circus horse he was, too, that went\r\nmilling and milling round so, that my boat’s crew could only trim dish,\r\nby sitting all their sterns on the outer gunwale. Presently up breaches\r\nfrom the bottom of the sea a bouncing great whale, with a milky-white\r\nhead and hump, all crows’ feet and wrinkles.”\r\n\r\n“It was he, it was he!” cried Ahab, suddenly letting out his suspended\r\nbreath.\r\n\r\n“And harpoons sticking in near his starboard fin.”\r\n\r\n“Aye, aye—they were mine—_my_ irons,” cried Ahab, exultingly—“but on!”\r\n\r\n“Give me a chance, then,” said the Englishman, good-humoredly. “Well,\r\nthis old great-grandfather, with the white head and hump, runs all\r\nafoam into the pod, and goes to snapping furiously at my fast-line!\r\n\r\n“Aye, I see!—wanted to part it; free the fast-fish—an old trick—I know\r\nhim.”\r\n\r\n“How it was exactly,” continued the one-armed commander, “I do not\r\nknow; but in biting the line, it got foul of his teeth, caught there\r\nsomehow; but we didn’t know it then; so that when we afterwards pulled\r\non the line, bounce we came plump on to his hump! instead of the other\r\nwhale’s; that went off to windward, all fluking. Seeing how matters\r\nstood, and what a noble great whale it was—the noblest and biggest I\r\never saw, sir, in my life—I resolved to capture him, spite of the\r\nboiling rage he seemed to be in."},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KJNXEDHZCC8DR4EPSQD0QP4P","peer_label":"moby-dick","peer_type":"text","predicate":"derived_from"},{"peer":"01KJNXECF9R1EZKS5Z7J8A8ZSB","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KJNXM37BGJ4EBHZ5Q1YQPREQ","peer_label":"pip","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"person","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXKW3Z6GAC3QZ1MZC1PX63","peer_label":"pequod","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"whaling_ship","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXKW3DZQ5YTC2NQ9Q7VBWR","peer_label":"ahab","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"person","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM423TTC0Y0A1Y0X78QFB","peer_label":"nantucket","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"place","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM2S809DVNZ7YN3VESJ9R","peer_label":"london","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"place","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMTFJ8CHSHYJYEFX2KQSD","peer_label":"doubloon pequods mast","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"object","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMGRWHS50FVYNW0PCZX2S","peer_label":"murrays grammar","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"book","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMT9VZ7E4D7TB2MT8G7GM","peer_label":"the line whaling region","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"geographic_region","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMD5SFSG7Y214RXMJWD1E","peer_label":"silver ring","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"object","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMTFHWVBJHCY0547NZWZY","peer_label":"samuel enderby captain","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"person","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMTECKXGD75J9D6CH825E","peer_label":"white arm of sperm whale bone","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"prosthetic","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMTFJYKH381D8YRHTDHGH","peer_label":"chapter 100 leg and arm","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"document_section","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMGRPKHKGTKE4QXE44FR6","peer_label":"samuel enderby","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"whaling_ship","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMW38JQC1RN805DYQ05XM","peer_label":"ivory leg ahabs","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"prosthetic","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMXZBDRCQN2PMWGY6NTZW","peer_label":"blubber-hook","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"tool","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMTFA3TP9YE3E6CD7H4A0","peer_label":"cutting-tackle","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"equipment","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMD66Q48DF00W86XFV79C","peer_label":"tolland county","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"place","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMXDHEEQ536E0DQ6KEDFE","peer_label":"fast-line","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"equipment","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMW38525YKBCD6J2N4EKZ","peer_label":"fast-fish","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"concept","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMD5K85WQBCQGAD5AZXPW","peer_label":"white whale","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"animal","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:07:56.959Z"}}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-03-02T00:01:19.109Z","ts":"2026-03-02T00:07:58.309Z","edited_by":{"method":"system","user_id":"01KJ60XQBHJ0GBGTP9X8HXAPPM"}}
