Stop, Stubb; somehow, now, I don’t well know whether to go\r\nback and strike him, or—what’s that?—down here on my knees and pray for\r\nhim? Yes, that was the thought coming up in me; but it would be the\r\nfirst time I ever _did_ pray. It’s queer; very queer; and he’s queer\r\ntoo; aye, take him fore and aft, he’s about the queerest old man Stubb\r\never sailed with. How he flashed at me!—his eyes like powder-pans! is\r\nhe mad? Anyway there’s something on his mind, as sure as there must be\r\nsomething on a deck when it cracks. He aint in his bed now, either,\r\nmore than three hours out of the twenty-four; and he don’t sleep then.\r\nDidn’t that Dough-Boy, the steward, tell me that of a morning he always\r\nfinds the old man’s hammock clothes all rumpled and tumbled, and the\r\nsheets down at the foot, and the coverlid almost tied into knots, and\r\nthe pillow a sort of frightful hot, as though a baked brick had been on\r\nit? A hot old man! I guess he’s got what some folks ashore call a\r\nconscience; it’s a kind of Tic-Dolly-row they say—worse nor a\r\ntoothache. Well, well; I don’t know what it is, but the Lord keep me\r\nfrom catching it. He’s full of riddles; I wonder what he goes into the\r\nafter hold for, every night, as Dough-Boy tells me he suspects; what’s\r\nthat for, I should like to know? Who’s made appointments with him in\r\nthe hold? Ain’t that queer, now? But there’s no telling, it’s the old\r\ngame—Here goes for a snooze. Damn me, it’s worth a fellow’s while to be\r\nborn into the world, if only to fall right asleep. And now that I think\r\nof it, that’s about the first thing babies do, and that’s a sort of\r\nqueer, too. Damn me, but all things are queer, come to think of ’em.\r\nBut that’s against my principles. Think not, is my eleventh\r\ncommandment; and sleep when you can, is my twelfth—So here goes again.\r\nBut how’s that? didn’t he call me a dog? blazes! he called me ten times\r\na donkey, and piled a lot of jackasses on top of _that!_ He might as\r\nwell have kicked me, and done with it. Maybe he _did_ kick me, and I\r\ndidn’t observe it, I was so taken all aback with his brow, somehow. It\r\nflashed like a bleached bone. What the devil’s the matter with me? I\r\ndon’t stand right on my legs. Coming afoul of that old man has a sort\r\nof turned me wrong side out. By the Lord, I must have been dreaming,\r\nthough—How? how? how?—but the only way’s to stash it; so here goes to\r\nhammock again; and in the morning, I’ll see how this plaguey juggling\r\nthinks over by daylight.”\r\n\r\n\r\nCHAPTER 30. The Pipe.\r\n\r\nWhen Stubb had departed, Ahab stood for a while leaning over the\r\nbulwarks; and then, as had been usual with him of late, calling a\r\nsailor of the watch, he sent him below for his ivory stool, and also\r\nhis pipe. Lighting the pipe at the binnacle lamp and planting the stool\r\non the weather side of the deck, he sat and smoked.\r\n\r\nIn old Norse times, the thrones of the sea-loving Danish kings were\r\nfabricated, saith tradition, of the tusks of the narwhale. How could\r\none look at Ahab then, seated on that tripod of bones, without\r\nbethinking him of the royalty it symbolized? For a Khan of the plank,\r\nand a king of the sea, and a great lord of Leviathans was Ahab.\r\n\r\nSome moments passed, during which the thick vapor came from his mouth\r\nin quick and constant puffs, which blew back again into his face. “How\r\nnow,” he soliloquized at last, withdrawing the tube, “this smoking no\r\nlonger soothes. Oh, my pipe! hard must it go with me if thy charm be\r\ngone! Here have I been unconsciously toiling, not pleasuring—aye, and\r\nignorantly smoking to windward all the while; to windward, and with\r\nsuch nervous whiffs, as if, like the dying whale, my final jets were\r\nthe strongest and fullest of trouble. What business have I with this\r\npipe? This thing that is meant for sereneness, to send up mild white\r\nvapors among mild white hairs, not among torn iron-grey locks like\r\nmine. I’ll smoke no more—”\r\n\r\nHe tossed the still lighted pipe into the sea. The fire hissed in the\r\nwaves; the same instant the ship shot by the bubble the sinking pipe\r\nmade. With slouched hat, Ahab lurchingly paced the planks.\r\n\r\n\r\nCHAPTER 31. Queen Mab.\r\n\r\nNext morning Stubb accosted Flask.\r\n\r\n“Such a queer dream, King-Post, I never had. You know the old man’s\r\nivory leg, well I dreamed he kicked me with it; and when I tried to\r\nkick back, upon my soul, my little man, I kicked my leg right off! And\r\nthen, presto! Ahab seemed a pyramid, and I, like a blazing fool, kept\r\nkicking at it. But what was still more curious, Flask—you know how\r\ncurious all dreams are—through all this rage that I was in, I somehow\r\nseemed to be thinking to myself, that after all, it was not much of an\r\ninsult, that kick from Ahab. ‘Why,’ thinks I, ‘what’s the row? It’s not\r\na real leg, only a false leg.’ And there’s a mighty difference between\r\na living thump and a dead thump. That’s what makes a blow from the\r\nhand, Flask, fifty times more savage to bear than a blow from a cane.\r\nThe living member—that makes the living insult, my little man. And\r\nthinks I to myself all the while, mind, while I was stubbing my silly\r\ntoes against that cursed pyramid—so confoundedly contradictory was it\r\nall, all the while, I say, I was thinking to myself, ‘what’s his leg\r\nnow, but a cane—a whalebone cane. Yes,’ thinks I, ‘it was only a\r\nplayful cudgelling—in fact, only a whaleboning that he gave me—not a\r\nbase kick. Besides,’ thinks I, ‘look at it once; why, the end of it—the\r\nfoot part—what a small sort of end it is; whereas, if a broad footed\r\nfarmer kicked me, _there’s_ a devilish broad insult. But this insult is\r\nwhittled down to a point only.’ But now comes the greatest joke of the\r\ndream, Flask. While I was battering away at the pyramid, a sort of\r\nbadger-haired old merman, with a hump on his back, takes me by the\r\nshoulders, and slews me round. ‘What are you ’bout?’ says he. Slid!\r\nman, but I was frightened. Such a phiz! But, somehow, next moment I was\r\nover the fright. ‘What am I about?’ says I at last. ‘And what business\r\nis that of yours, I should like to know, Mr. Humpback? Do _you_ want a\r\nkick?’ By the lord, Flask, I had no sooner said that, than he turned\r\nround his stern to me, bent over, and dragging up a lot of seaweed he\r\nhad for a clout—what do you think, I saw?—why thunder alive, man, his\r\nstern was stuck full of marlinspikes, with the points out. Says I, on\r\nsecond thoughts, ‘I guess I won’t kick you, old fellow.’ ‘Wise Stubb,’\r\nsaid he, ‘wise Stubb;’ and kept muttering it all the time, a sort of\r\neating of his own gums like a chimney hag. Seeing he wasn’t going to\r\nstop saying over his ‘wise Stubb, wise Stubb,’ I thought I might as\r\nwell fall to kicking the pyramid again. But I had only just lifted my\r\nfoot for it, when he roared out, ‘Stop that kicking!’ ‘Halloa,’ says I,\r\n‘what’s the matter now, old fellow?’ ‘Look ye here,’ says he; ‘let’s\r\nargue the insult. Captain Ahab kicked ye, didn’t he?’ ‘Yes, he did,’\r\nsays I—‘right _here_ it was.’ ‘Very good,’ says he—‘he used his ivory\r\nleg, didn’t he?’ ‘Yes, he did,’ says I. ‘Well then,’ says he, ‘wise\r\nStubb, what have you to complain of? Didn’t he kick with right good\r\nwill? it wasn’t a common pitch pine leg he kicked with, was it? No, you\r\nwere kicked by a great man, and with a beautiful ivory leg, Stubb. It’s\r\nan honor; I consider it an honor. Listen, wise Stubb. In old England\r\nthe greatest lords think it great glory to be slapped by a queen, and\r\nmade garter-knights of; but, be _your_ boast, Stubb, that ye were\r\nkicked by old Ahab, and made a wise man of."},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KJNXEDHZCC8DR4EPSQD0QP4P","peer_label":"moby-dick","peer_type":"text","predicate":"derived_from"},{"peer":"01KJNXECF9R1EZKS5Z7J8A8ZSB","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KJNXKV7VCG1M1V2KKXZJD4A9","peer_label":"stubb","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"person","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXKW3DZQ5YTC2NQ9Q7VBWR","peer_label":"ahab","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"person","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXKV9JR5QVCDKHMH41830J","peer_label":"flask","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"person","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM3WZTNDHCQHKJFP3V75A","peer_label":"tic-dolly-row","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"concept","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM3Y01SQ5YR3EQNR1GG38","peer_label":"dough-boy","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"person","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM41ZYQDAF2WVTT59TNHJ","peer_label":"ivory stool","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"furniture","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM4GYCF462SJK77SQAYD5","peer_label":"narwhale tusks","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"animal_part","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM4524WKH9FX52E11DK5W","peer_label":"the pipe chapter title","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"chapter_title","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM4W0PPTT9P73FQB7EC43","peer_label":"king of the sea","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"epithet","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM4G7XWT8SJW75XR3BZFA","peer_label":"ahabs smoking pipe","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"object","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM41MQMM7RK8DG2ZC94V8","peer_label":"chapter 30","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"document_section","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM41DYZS68TCAA1YZN4RJ","peer_label":"after hold","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"ship_location","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM4RVNFVWHCRGFYKBGQC2","peer_label":"danish kings","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"historical_group","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM4RVEJH041RAZ74GT3ME","peer_label":"khan of the plank","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"epithet","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM5C9T47SBNGM9DKSMYG5","peer_label":"queen mab chapter title","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"chapter_title","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM4X60GXJAKDRVRT8K7RP","peer_label":"great lord of leviathans","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"epithet","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM6DSEZB3557G4CN1HAWK","peer_label":"marlinspikes","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"tool","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM5VAKH0Q798MHFK6J7RV","peer_label":"badger-haired old merman","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"fictional_character","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM5HNMRKRJ0093DG4D42D","peer_label":"ahabs ivory leg dream","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"prosthetic_limb","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM6DAQDZGBPFTSN9PSHYS","peer_label":"pyramid dream symbol","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"dream_symbol","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM6VCQ2AMDBPYJ8TJ3V4Z","peer_label":"queen england","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"royal_figure","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM5D2Z35Z6WX5S8YRMX7R","peer_label":"chapter 31","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"document_section","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXM6E4GBTWDJ428ZGW9ZJJ","peer_label":"old england","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"place","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}},{"peer":"01KJNXMCXMSAV5SXP0894XZHVC","peer_label":"garter-knights","predicate":"extracted_entity","properties":{"entity_type":"honorary_order","extracted_at":"2026-03-02T00:02:38.863Z"}}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-03-02T00:01:15.666Z","ts":"2026-03-02T00:02:48.399Z","edited_by":{"method":"system","user_id":"01KJ60XQBHJ0GBGTP9X8HXAPPM"}}
