J.\nCraig. Stage directions, when not bracketed, are\nfrom either the First Quarto or the First Folio or\nboth; bracketed stage directions are modern. The\ntitle of the play is from the First Quarto. The\nDramatis Personae are as given in the First Folio\nunder the caption 'The Actors' Names.'\nIn II. ii. 131-149 the present editor has substituted\nthe original assignment of speeches, in 11. 131, 135, as\nfound in both Quarto and Folio, for Craig's assign\nment, as there seems to be no sufficient reason for\nemendations. He has also assigned 11. 139-148 to the\nPrince. Craig divides as follows:\n131-133 Poins. Sir John . . . certificate.\n184 Prince. Peace.\n135-149 Poins. I wiU . . . eat it.\nMany minor departures from the Oxford text have\nbeen made in this edition in an attempt to arrive at a\nconsistent text. The Oxford editor has in the major\nity of cases followed the readings of the First\nQuarto, but in about fifty instances he has adopted\nthe slightly different expressions used in the more\nformal and less colloquial Folio text. For example,\nin the scenes of low comedy, he in the Folio is almost\ninvariably a' in the Quarto; is it is is 't; it is is 'tis;etc. The Oxford editor has used sometimes the\nformal, sometimes the informal expression.
