The Vice, a character\nin the old Morality plays, carried a thin wooden\ndagger.\nIII. ii. 357. philosopher's two stones. The phi\nlosophers' stone is the reputed stone of the alchemists\nwhich transmutes base metals into gold. Falstaff\ndecides that Justice Shallow will be as valuable to\nhim as two philosophers' stones!\nIV. i. 94-96. This passage is obviously corrupt.\nThe archbishop means in general: 'I make this my\nquarrel on both public and private grounds, that is,\nbecause of the sufferings of the commonwealth and\nof my own family at the hands of King Henry.' The\nArchbishop's brother, an adherent of King Richard,\nhad been executed by King Henry's order; cf. 1\nHenry IV, I. iii. 270.\nIV. i. 117 ff.
