Hack, sir? Hack, sir?\"\r\n\r\n\"Cab, sir? Cab, sir? Cab, sir?\"\r\n\r\n\"This way, sir! This way, sir! This way, sir!\"\r\n\r\n\"He's a rogue! Not him! he's a rogue!\"\r\n\r\nPierre was surrounded by a crowd of contending hackmen, all holding long\r\nwhips in their hands; while others eagerly beckoned to him from their\r\nboxes, where they sat elevated between their two coach-lamps like\r\nshabby, discarded saints. The whip-stalks thickened around him, and\r\nseveral reports of the cracking lashes sharply sounded in his ears. Just\r\nbursting from a scene so goading as his interview with the scornful Glen\r\nin the dazzling drawing-room, to Pierre, this sudden tumultuous\r\nsurrounding of him by whip-stalks and lashes, seemed like the onset of\r\nthe chastising fiends upon Orestes. But, breaking away from them, he\r\nseized the first plated door-handle near him, and, leaping into the\r\nhack, shouted for whoever was the keeper of it, to mount his box\r\nforthwith and drive off in a given direction.\r\n\r\nThe vehicle had proceeded some way down the great avenue when it\r\npaused, and the driver demanded whither now; what place?\r\n\r\n\"The Watch-house of the---- Ward,\" cried Pierre.\r\n\r\n\"Hi! hi! Goin' to deliver himself up, hey!\" grinned the fellow to\r\nhimself--\"Well, that's a sort of honest, any way:--g'lang, you\r\ndogs!--whist! whee! wha!--g'lang!\"\r\n\r\nThe sights and sounds which met the eye of Pierre on re-entering the\r\nwatch-house, filled him with inexpressible horror and fury. The before\r\ndecent, drowsy place, now fairly reeked with all things unseemly. Hardly\r\npossible was it to tell what conceivable cause or occasion had, in the\r\ncomparatively short absence of Pierre, collected such a base\r\ncongregation. In indescribable disorder, frantic, diseased-looking men\r\nand women of all colors, and in all imaginable flaunting, immodest,\r\ngrotesque, and shattered dresses, were leaping, yelling, and cursing\r\naround him. The torn Madras handkerchiefs of negresses, and the red\r\ngowns of yellow girls, hanging in tatters from their naked bosoms, mixed\r\nwith the rent dresses of deep-rouged white women, and the split coats,\r\ncheckered vests, and protruding shirts of pale, or whiskered, or\r\nhaggard, or mustached fellows of all nations, some of whom seemed scared\r\nfrom their beds, and others seemingly arrested in the midst of some\r\ncrazy and wanton dance. On all sides, were heard drunken male and female\r\nvoices, in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, interlarded now and\r\nthen, with the foulest of all human lingoes, that dialect of sin and\r\ndeath, known as the Cant language, or the Flash.\r\n\r\nRunning among this combined babel of persons and voices, several of the\r\npolice were vainly striving to still the tumult; while others were busy\r\nhandcuffing the more desperate; and here and there the distracted\r\nwretches, both men and women, gave downright battle to the officers; and\r\nstill others already handcuffed struck out at them with their joined\r\nironed arms. Meanwhile, words and phrases unrepeatable in God's\r\nsunlight, and whose very existence was utterly unknown, and undreamed\r\nof by tens of thousands of the decent people of the city; syllables\r\nobscene and accursed were shouted forth in tones plainly evincing that\r\nthey were the common household breath of their utterers. The\r\nthieves'-quarters, and all the brothels, Lock-and-Sin hospitals for\r\nincurables, and infirmaries and infernoes of hell seemed to have made\r\none combined sortie, and poured out upon earth through the vile vomitory\r\nof some unmentionable cellar.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 9"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJTDSWGP8QJ7MKTTPBN1C","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AN33E4XW375B79K3FK3W0","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AN33PG7XH3HTJ7ESNE20V","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:58.478Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:26.624Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
