He was carelessly lounging in a half side-long\r\nattitude upon a large sofa, and appeared as if but just interrupted in\r\nsome very agreeable chat with a diminutive but vivacious brunette,\r\noccupying the other end. The dandy and the man; strength and effeminacy;\r\ncourage and indolence, were so strangely blended in this superb-eyed\r\nyouth, that at first sight, it seemed impossible to decide whether there\r\nwas any genuine mettle in him, or not.\r\n\r\nSome years had gone by since the cousins had met; years peculiarly\r\nproductive of the greatest conceivable changes in the general personal\r\naspect of human beings. Nevertheless, the eye seldom alters. The instant\r\ntheir eyes met, they mutually recognized each other. But both did not\r\nbetray the recognition.\r\n\r\n\"Glen!\" cried Pierre, and paused a few steps from him.\r\n\r\nBut the superb-eyed only settled himself lower down in his lounging\r\nattitude, and slowly withdrawing a small, unpretending, and unribboned\r\nglass from his vest pocket, steadily, yet not entirely insultingly,\r\nnotwithstanding the circumstances, scrutinized Pierre. Then, dropping\r\nhis glass, turned slowly round upon the gentlemen near him, saying in\r\nthe same peculiar, mixed, and musical voice as before:\r\n\r\n\"I do not know him; it is an entire mistake; why don't the servants take\r\nhim out, and the music go on?---- As I was saying, Miss Clara, the\r\nstatues you saw in the Louvre are not to be mentioned with those in\r\nFlorence and Rome. Why, there now is that vaunted _chef d'oeuvre_, the\r\nFighting Gladiator of the Louvre----\"\r\n\r\n\"Fighting Gladiator it is!\" yelled Pierre, leaping toward him like\r\nSpartacus. But the savage impulse in him was restrained by the alarmed\r\nfemale shrieks and wild gestures around him. As he paused, several\r\ngentlemen made motions to pinion him; but shaking them off fiercely, he\r\nstood erect, and isolated for an instant, and fastening his glance upon\r\nhis still reclining, and apparently unmoved cousin, thus spoke:--\r\n\r\n\"Glendinning Stanly, thou disown'st Pierre not so abhorrently as Pierre\r\ndoes thee. By Heaven, had I a knife, Glen, I could prick thee on the\r\nspot; let out all thy Glendinning blood, and then sew up the vile\r\nremainder. Hound, and base blot upon the general humanity!\"\r\n\r\n\"This is very extraordinary:--remarkable case of combined imposture and\r\ninsanity; but where are the servants? why don't that black advance? Lead\r\nhim out, my good Doc, lead him out. Carefully, carefully! stay\"--putting\r\nhis hand in his pocket--\"there, take that, and have the poor fellow\r\ndriven off somewhere.\"\r\n\r\nBolting his rage in him, as impossible to be sated by any conduct, in\r\nsuch a place, Pierre now turned, sprang down the stairs, and fled the\r\nhouse.\r\n\r\n\r\nIII.\r\n\r\n\"Hack, sir? Hack, sir? Hack, sir?\"\r\n\r\n\"Cab, sir? Cab, sir? Cab, sir?\"\r\n\r\n\"This way, sir! This way, sir! This way, sir!\"\r\n\r\n\"He's a rogue! Not him! he's a rogue!\"\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 8"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJTDSWGP8QJ7MKTTPBN1C","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AN3304R47TMS6YQ261451","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AN33EEEHFS2F584PAMDPV","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:58.478Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:26.406Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
