It must be lighted up too. It is the small\r\nold-fashioned dwelling with stone lion-heads above the windows. But make\r\nhim turn round, and drive slowly, and I will soon point it out.\"\r\n\r\n\"Can't see lions in the dark\"--growled the driver--\"lions; ha! ha!\r\njackasses more likely!\"\r\n\r\n\"Look you,\" said the officer, \"I shall see you tightly housed this\r\nnight, my fine fellow, if you don't cease your jabber. Sir,\" he added,\r\nresuming with Pierre, \"I am sure there is some mistake here. I perfectly\r\nwell know now the house you mean. I passed it within the last half-hour;\r\nall as quiet there as ever. No one lives there, I think; I never saw a\r\nlight in it. Are you not mistaken in something, then?\"\r\n\r\nPierre paused in perplexity and foreboding. Was it possible that Glen\r\nhad willfully and utterly neglected his letter? Not possible. But it\r\nmight not have come to his hand; the mails sometimes delayed. Then\r\nagain, it was not wholly out of the question, that the house was\r\nprepared for them after all, even though it showed no outward sign. But\r\nthat was not probable. At any rate, as the driver protested, that his\r\nfour horses and lumbering vehicle could not turn short round in that\r\nstreet; and that if he must go back, it could only be done by driving\r\non, and going round the block, and so retracing his road; and as after\r\nsuch a procedure, on his part, then in case of a confirmed\r\ndisappointment respecting the house, the driver would seem warranted, at\r\nleast in some of his unmannerliness; and as Pierre loathed the villain\r\naltogether, therefore, in order to run no such risks, he came to a\r\nsudden determination on the spot.\r\n\r\n\"I owe you very much, my good friend,\" said he to the officer, \"for your\r\ntimely assistance. To be frank, what you have just told me has indeed\r\nperplexed me not a little concerning the place where I proposed to stop.\r\nIs there no hotel in this neighborhood, where I could leave these ladies\r\nwhile I seek my friend?\"\r\n\r\nWonted to all manner of deceitfulness, and engaged in a calling which\r\nunavoidably makes one distrustful of mere appearances, however specious,\r\nhowever honest; the really good-hearted officer, now eyed Pierre in the\r\ndubious light with a most unpleasant scrutiny; and he abandoned the\r\n\"Sir,\" and the tone of his voice sensibly changed, as he\r\nreplied:--\"There is no hotel in this neighborhood; it is too off the\r\nthoroughfares.\"\r\n\r\n\"Come! come!\"--cried the driver, now growing bold again--\"though you're\r\nan officer, I'm a citizen for all that. You haven't any further right to\r\nkeep me out of my bed now. He don't know where he wants to go to, cause\r\nhe haint got no place at all to go to; so I'll just dump him here, and\r\nyou dar'n't stay me.\"\r\n\r\n\"Don't be impertinent now,\" said the officer, but not so sternly as\r\nbefore.\r\n\r\n\"I'll have my rights though, I tell you that! Leave go of my arm; damn\r\nye, get off the box; I've the law now. I say mister, come tramp, here\r\ngoes your luggage,\" and so saying he dragged toward him a light trunk on\r\nthe top of the stage.\r\n\r\n\"Keep a clean tongue in ye now\"--said the officer--\"and don't be in\r\nquite so great a hurry,\" then addressing Pierre, who had now re-alighted\r\nfrom the coach--\"Well, this can't continue; what do you intend to do?\"\r\n\r\n\"Not to ride further with that man, at any rate,\" said Pierre; \"I will\r\nstop right here for the present.\"\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJTDSWGP8QJ7MKTTPBN1C","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AN330TKEZKNTQSA24WPWH","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AN330YNFSB4NYW1WBNHQW","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:58.464Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:26.016Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
