Though by no means are such characteristics invariable\r\nexponents of the predominant mood or general disposition of a man (since\r\nso accidental a thing as a numb finger, or a bad quill, or poor ink, or\r\nsqualid paper, or a rickety desk may produce all sorts of\r\nmodifications), yet in the present instance, the handwriting of Pierre\r\nhappened plainly to attest and corroborate the spirit of his\r\ncommunication. The sheet was large; but the words were placarded upon it\r\nin heavy though rapid lines, only six or eight to the page. And as the\r\nfootman of a haughty visitor--some Count or Duke--announces the chariot\r\nof his lord by a thunderous knock on the portal; so to Glen did Pierre,\r\nin the broad, sweeping, and prodigious superscription of his letter,\r\nforewarn him what manner of man was on the road.\r\n\r\nIn the moment of strong feeling a wonderful condensativeness points the\r\ntongue and pen; so that ideas, then enunciated sharp and quick as\r\nminute-guns, in some other hour of unruffledness or unstimulatedness,\r\nrequire considerable time and trouble to verbally recall.\r\n\r\nNot here and now can we set down the precise contents of Pierre's\r\nletter, without a tautology illy doing justice to the ideas themselves.\r\nAnd though indeed the dread of tautology be the continual torment of\r\nsome earnest minds, and, as such, is surely a weakness in them; and\r\nthough no wise man will wonder at conscientious Virgil all eager at\r\ndeath to burn his Æniad for a monstrous heap of inefficient superfluity;\r\nyet not to dread tautology at times only belongs to those enviable\r\ndunces, whom the partial God hath blessed, over all the earth, with the\r\ninexhaustible self-riches of vanity, and folly, and a blind\r\nself-complacency.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKVA01R4HB9SVPSE8MQ90","peer_type":"subsection","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AN2AD29T9FC7ZR7AG7GCS","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AN2AP9JHYHWBTN5WCP94N","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:57.686Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:25.587Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
