But the portrait which she\r\nheld to do justice to her husband, correctly to convey his features in\r\ndetail, and more especially their truest, and finest, and noblest\r\ncombined expression; this portrait was a much larger one, and in the\r\ngreat drawing-room below occupied the most conspicuous and honorable\r\nplace on the wall.\r\n\r\nEven to Pierre these two paintings had always seemed strangely\r\ndissimilar. And as the larger one had been painted many years after the\r\nother, and therefore brought the original pretty nearly within his own\r\nchildish recollections; therefore, he himself could not but deem it by\r\nfar the more truthful and life-like presentation of his father. So that\r\nthe mere preference of his mother, however strong, was not at all\r\nsurprising to him, but rather coincided with his own conceit. Yet not\r\nfor this, must the other portrait be so decidedly rejected. Because, in\r\nthe first place, there was a difference in time, and some difference of\r\ncostume to be considered, and the wide difference of the styles of the\r\nrespective artiste, and the wide difference of those respective,\r\nsemi-reflected, ideal faces, which, even in the presence of the\r\noriginal, a spiritual artist will rather choose to draw from than from\r\nthe fleshy face, however brilliant and fine. Moreover, while the larger\r\nportrait was that of a middle-aged, married man, and seemed to possess\r\nall the nameless and slightly portly tranquillities, incident to that\r\ncondition when a felicitous one; the smaller portrait painted a brisk,\r\nunentangled, young bachelor, gayly ranging up and down in the world;\r\nlight-hearted, and a very little bladish perhaps; and charged to the\r\nlips with the first uncloying morning fullness and freshness of life.\r\nHere, certainly, large allowance was to be made in any careful, candid\r\nestimation of these portraits. To Pierre this conclusion had become\r\nwell-nigh irresistible, when he placed side by side two portraits of\r\nhimself; one taken in his early childhood, a frocked and belted boy of\r\nfour years old; and the other, a grown youth of sixteen. Except an\r\nindestructible, all-surviving something in the eyes and on the temples,\r\nPierre could hardly recognize the loud-laughing boy in the tall, and\r\npensively smiling youth. If a few years, then, can have in me made all\r\nthis difference, why not in my father? thought Pierre.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKSA6S2Y9S37V9SG92YNE","peer_type":"subsection","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AN1KE8MQH8CT0PJENB95Z","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AN24ZTY2QP6JWXZX18BRG","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:57.503Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:10.938Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
