The immortal amaranth, it will not die, but last year's\r\nflowers survive to this! The terraced pastures grow glittering white,\r\nand in warm June still show like banks of snow:--fit token of the\r\nsterileness the amaranth begets! Then free us from the amaranth, good\r\nlady, or be pleased to abate our rent!\"\r\n\r\nNow, on a somewhat nearer approach, the precipice did not belie its\r\npurple promise from the manorial piazza--that sweet imposing purple\r\npromise, which seemed fully to vindicate the Bunyanish old title\r\noriginally bestowed;--but showed the profuse aerial foliage of a hanging\r\nforest. Nevertheless, coming still more nigh, long and frequent rents\r\namong the mass of leaves revealed horrible glimpses of dark-dripping\r\nrocks, and mysterious mouths of wolfish caves. Struck by this most\r\nunanticipated view, the tourist now quickened his impulsive steps to\r\nverify the change by coming into direct contact with so chameleon a\r\nheight. As he would now speed on, the lower ground, which from the\r\nmanor-house piazza seemed all a grassy level, suddenly merged into a\r\nvery long and weary acclivity, slowly rising close up to the precipice's\r\nbase; so that the efflorescent grasses rippled against it, as the\r\nefflorescent waves of some great swell or long rolling billow ripple\r\nagainst the water-line of a steep gigantic war-ship on the sea. And, as\r\namong the rolling sea-like sands of Egypt, disordered rows of broken\r\nSphinxes lead to the Cheopian pyramid itself; so this long acclivity was\r\nthickly strewn with enormous rocky masses, grotesque in shape, and with\r\nwonderful features on them, which seemed to express that slumbering\r\nintelligence visible in some recumbent beasts--beasts whose intelligence\r\nseems struck dumb in them by some sorrowful and inexplicable spell.\r\nNevertheless, round and round those still enchanted rocks, hard by their\r\nutmost rims, and in among their cunning crevices, the misanthropic\r\nhill-scaling goat nibbled his sweetest food; for the rocks, so barren in\r\nthemselves, distilled a subtile moisture, which fed with greenness all\r\nthings that grew about their igneous marge.\r\n\r\nQuitting those recumbent rocks, you still ascended toward the hanging\r\nforest, and piercing within its lowermost fringe, then suddenly you\r\nstood transfixed, as a marching soldier confounded at the sight of an\r\nimpregnable redoubt, where he had fancied it a practicable vault to his\r\ncourageous thews. Cunningly masked hitherto, by the green tapestry of\r\nthe interlacing leaves, a terrific towering palisade of dark mossy\r\nmassiness confronted you; and, trickling with unevaporable moisture,\r\ndistilled upon you from its beetling brow slow thunder-showers of\r\nwater-drops, chill as the last dews of death. Now you stood and shivered\r\nin that twilight, though it were high noon and burning August down the\r\nmeads. All round and round, the grim scarred rocks rallied and\r\nre-rallied themselves; shot up, protruded, stretched, swelled, and\r\neagerly reached forth; on every side bristlingly radiating with a\r\nhideous repellingness. Tossed, and piled, and indiscriminate among\r\nthese, like bridging rifts of logs up-jammed in alluvial-rushing streams\r\nof far Arkansas: or, like great masts and yards of overwhelmed fleets\r\nhurled high and dashed amain, all splintering together, on hovering\r\nridges of the Atlantic sea,--you saw the melancholy trophies which the\r\nNorth Wind, championing the unquenchable quarrel of the Winter, had\r\nwrested from the forests, and dismembered them on their own chosen\r\nbattle-ground, in barbarous disdain. 'Mid this spectacle of wide and\r\nwanton spoil, insular noises of falling rocks would boomingly explode\r\nupon the silence and fright all the echoes, which ran shrieking in and\r\nout among the caves, as wailing women and children in some assaulted\r\ntown.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKHN245ZX19F3Z3HV21AE","peer_type":"section","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AN24V9FBZSRZBGKC6D238","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AN24V4DVPGEF8W499013B","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:57.499Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:34.348Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
