It would be so pleasant an\r\nemployment for her, besides contributing to their common fund. Pierre\r\nwell knew her expertness in catching likenesses, and judiciously and\r\ntruthfully beautifying them; not by altering the features so much, as by\r\nsteeping them in a beautifying atmosphere. For even so, said Lucy,\r\nthrown into the Lagoon, and there beheld--as I have heard--the roughest\r\nstones, without transformation, put on the softest aspects. If Pierre\r\nwould only take a little trouble to bring sitters to her room, she\r\ndoubted not a fine harvest of heads might easily be secured. Certainly,\r\namong the numerous inmates of the old Church, Pierre must know many who\r\nwould have no objections to being sketched. Moreover, though as yet she\r\nhad had small opportunity to see them; yet among such a remarkable\r\ncompany of poets, philosophers, and mystics of all sorts, there must be\r\nsome striking heads. In conclusion, she expressed her satisfaction at\r\nthe chamber prepared for her, inasmuch as having been formerly the\r\nstudio of an artist, one window had been considerably elevated, while by\r\na singular arrangement of the interior shutters, the light could in any\r\ndirection be thrown about at will.\r\n\r\nAlready Pierre had anticipated something of this sort; the first sight\r\nof the easel having suggested it to him. His reply was therefore not\r\nwholly unconsidered. He said, that so far as she herself was concerned,\r\nthe systematic practice of her art at present would certainly be a great\r\nadvantage in supplying her with a very delightful occupation. But since\r\nshe could hardly hope for any patronage from her mother's fashionable\r\nand wealthy associates; indeed, as such a thing must be very far from\r\nher own desires; and as it was only from the Apostles she could--for\r\nsome time to come, at least--reasonably anticipate sitters; and as those\r\nApostles were almost universally a very forlorn and penniless\r\nset--though in truth there were some wonderfully rich-looking heads\r\namong them--therefore, Lucy must not look for much immediate pecuniary\r\nemolument. Ere long she might indeed do something very handsome; but at\r\nthe outset, it was well to be moderate in her expectations. This\r\nadmonishment came, modifiedly, from that certain stoic, dogged mood of\r\nPierre, born of his recent life, which taught him never to expect any\r\ngood from any thing; but always to anticipate ill; however not in\r\nunreadiness to meet the contrary; and then, if good came, so much the\r\nbetter. He added that he would that very morning go among the rooms and\r\ncorridors of the Apostles, familiarly announcing that his cousin, a\r\nlady-artist in crayons, occupied a room adjoining his, where she would\r\nbe very happy to receive any sitters.\r\n\r\n\"And now, Lucy, what shall be the terms? That is a very important point,\r\nthou knowest.\"\r\n\r\n\"I suppose, Pierre, they must be very low,\" said Lucy, looking at him\r\nmeditatively.\r\n\r\n\"Very low, Lucy; very low, indeed.\"\r\n\r\n\"Well, ten dollars, then.\"\r\n\r\n\"Ten Banks of England, Lucy!\" exclaimed Pierre. \"Why, Lucy, that were\r\nalmost a quarter's income for some of the Apostles!\"\r\n\r\n\"Four dollars, Pierre.\"\r\n\r\n\"I will tell thee now, Lucy--but first, how long does it take to\r\ncomplete one portrait?\"\r\n\r\n\"Two sittings; and two mornings' work by myself, Pierre.\"\r\n\r\n\"And let me see; what are thy materials? They are not very costly, I\r\nbelieve. 'Tis not like cutting glass,--thy tools must not be pointed\r\nwith diamonds, Lucy?\"\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKHN210ZQEHQ1BTZXXTMZ","peer_type":"section","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AN1KZR2E7FWEBACRDJKS9","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:56.964Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:33.242Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
