Besides, in\r\nPierre's case, this resentment was heightened by Glen's previous\r\nhypocritical demeanor. For now all his suspicions seemed abundantly\r\nverified; and comparing all dates, he inferred that Glen's visit to\r\nEurope had only been undertaken to wear off the pang of his rejection by\r\nLucy, a rejection tacitly consequent upon her not denying her affianced\r\nrelation to Pierre.\r\n\r\nBut now, under the mask of profound sympathy--in time, ripening into\r\nlove--for a most beautiful girl, ruffianly deserted by her betrothed,\r\nGlen could afford to be entirely open in his new suit, without at all\r\nexposing his old scar to the world. So at least it now seemed to Pierre.\r\nMoreover, Glen could now approach Lucy under the most favorable possible\r\nauspices. He could approach her as a deeply sympathizing friend, all\r\nwishful to assuage her sorrow, but hinting nothing, at present, of any\r\nselfish matrimonial intent; by enacting this prudent and unclamorous\r\npart, the mere sight of such tranquil, disinterested, but indestructible\r\ndevotedness, could not but suggest in Lucy's mind, very natural\r\ncomparisons between Glen and Pierre, most deplorably abasing to the\r\nlatter. Then, no woman--as it would sometimes seem--no woman is utterly\r\nfree from the influence of a princely social position in her suitor,\r\nespecially if he be handsome and young. And Glen would come to her now\r\nthe master of two immense fortunes, and the heir, by voluntary election,\r\nno less than by blood propinquity, to the ancestral bannered hall, and\r\nthe broad manorial meadows of the Glendinnings. And thus, too, the\r\nspirit of Pierre's own mother would seem to press Glen's suit. Indeed,\r\nsituated now as he was Glen would seem all the finest part of Pierre,\r\nwithout any of Pierre's shame; would almost seem Pierre himself--what\r\nPierre had once been to Lucy. And as in the case of a man who has lost a\r\nsweet wife, and who long refuses the least consolation; as this man at\r\nlast finds a singular solace in the companionship of his wife's sister,\r\nwho happens to bear a peculiar family resemblance to the dead; and as\r\nhe, in the end, proposes marriage to this sister, merely from the force\r\nof such magical associative influences; so it did not seem wholly out of\r\nreason to suppose, that the great manly beauty of Glen, possessing a\r\nstrong related similitude to Pierre's, might raise in Lucy's heart\r\nassociations, which would lead her at least to seek--if she could not\r\nfind--solace for one now regarded as dead and gone to her forever, in\r\nthe devotedness of another, who would notwithstanding almost seem as\r\nthat dead one brought back to life.\r\n\r\nDeep, deep, and still deep and deeper must we go, if we would find out\r\nthe heart of a man; descending into which is as descending a spiral\r\nstair in a shaft, without any end, and where that endlessness is only\r\nconcealed by the spiralness of the stair, and the blackness of the\r\nshaft.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKVZFJ847Y2SPBRMF7PA4","peer_type":"section","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AMZVH779RHH3WB3NRPQW2","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AMZVHJWS35TGZWH9AVQ2D","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:55.153Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:31.134Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
