On both sides, from the\r\nhedges, came to Pierre the clover bloom of Saddle Meadows, and from\r\nLucy's mouth and cheek came the fresh fragrance of her violet young\r\nbeing.\r\n\r\n\"Smell I the flowers, or thee?\" cried Pierre.\r\n\r\n\"See I lakes, or eyes?\" cried Lucy, her own gazing down into his soul,\r\nas two stars gaze down into a tarn.\r\n\r\nNo Cornwall miner ever sunk so deep a shaft beneath the sea, as Love\r\nwill sink beneath the floatings of the eyes. Love sees ten million\r\nfathoms down, till dazzled by the floor of pearls. The eye is Love's own\r\nmagic glass, where all things that are not of earth, glide in\r\nsupernatural light. There are not so many fishes in the sea, as there\r\nare sweet images in lovers' eyes. In those miraculous translucencies\r\nswim the strange eye-fish with wings, that sometimes leap out, instinct\r\nwith joy; moist fish-wings wet the lover's cheek. Love's eyes are holy\r\nthings; therein the mysteries of life are lodged; looking in each\r\nother's eyes, lovers see the ultimate secret of the worlds; and with\r\nthrills eternally untranslatable, feel that Love is god of all. Man or\r\nwoman who has never loved, nor once looked deep down into their own\r\nlover's eyes, they know not the sweetest and the loftiest religion of\r\nthis earth. Love is both Creator's and Saviour's gospel to mankind; a\r\nvolume bound in rose-leaves, clasped with violets, and by the beaks of\r\nhumming-birds printed with peach-juice on the leaves of lilies.\r\n\r\nEndless is the account of Love. Time and space can not contain Love's\r\nstory. All things that are sweet to see, or taste, or feel, or hear,\r\nall these things were made by Love; and none other things were made by\r\nLove. Love made not the Arctic zones, but Love is ever reclaiming them.\r\nSay, are not the fierce things of this earth daily, hourly going out?\r\nWhere now are your wolves of Britain? Where in Virginia now, find you\r\nthe panther and the pard? Oh, love is busy everywhere. Everywhere Love\r\nhath Moravian missionaries. No Propagandist like to love. The south wind\r\nwooes the barbarous north; on many a distant shore the gentler west wind\r\npersuades the arid east.\r\n\r\nAll this Earth is Love's affianced; vainly the demon Principle howls to\r\nstay the banns. Why round her middle wears this world so rich a zone of\r\ntorrid verdure, if she be not dressing for the final rites? And why\r\nprovides she orange blossoms and lilies of the valley, if she would not\r\nthat all men and maids should love and marry? For every wedding where\r\ntrue lovers wed, helps on the march of universal Love. Who are brides\r\nhere shall be Love's bridemaids in the marriage world to come. So on all\r\nsides Love allures; can contain himself what youth who views the wonders\r\nof the beauteous woman-world? Where a beautiful woman is, there is all\r\nAsia and her Bazars. Italy hath not a sight before the beauty of a\r\nYankee girl; nor heaven a blessing beyond her earthly love. Did not the\r\nangelical Lotharios come down to earth, that they might taste of mortal\r\nwoman's Love and Beauty? even while her own silly brothers were pining\r\nafter the self-same Paradise they left? Yes, those envying angels did\r\ncome down; did emigrate; and who emigrates except to be better off?\r\n\r\nLove is this world's great redeemer and reformer; and as all beautiful\r\nwomen are her selectest emissaries, so hath Love gifted them with a\r\nmagnetical persuasiveness, that no youth can possibly repel. The own\r\nheart's choice of every youth, seems ever as an inscrutable witch to\r\nhim; and by ten thousand concentric spells and circling incantations,\r\nglides round and round him, as he turns: murmuring meanings of\r\nunearthly import; and summoning up to him all the subterranean sprites\r\nand gnomes; and unpeopling all the sea for naiads to swim round him; so\r\nthat mysteries are evoked as in exhalations by this Love;--what wonder\r\nthen that Love was aye a mystic?\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJS0928G0P7MJBH462X5C","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JSYKSGCE149MH9HF6A","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AMZ1TZ9KXRXZNKXPYY9ZN","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:54.344Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:49:03.298Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
