I say, Pounce, has any one been scouting around _you_ this\r\nmorning?”\r\n\r\n“Four on ’em,” says Pounce. “I know’d it; I know’d the muffled dice was\r\nrattlin’!”\r\n\r\n“Leggs!” says the master-at-arms to his other aid, “Leggs, how is it\r\nwith _you_—any spies?”\r\n\r\n“Ten on’ em,” says Leggs. “There’s one on ’em now—that fellow stitching\r\na hat.”\r\n\r\n“Halloo, you, sir!” cried the master-at-arms, “top your boom and sail\r\nlarge, now. If I see you about me again, I’ll have you up to the mast.”\r\n\r\n“What am I a-doin’ now?” says the hat-stitcher, with a face as long as\r\na rope-walk. “Can’t a feller be workin’ here, without being ’spected of\r\nTom Coxe’s traverse, up one ladder and down t’other?”\r\n\r\n“Oh, I know the moves, sir; I have been on board a _guardo_. Top your\r\nboom, I say, and be off, or I’ll have you hauled up and riveted in a\r\nclinch—both fore-tacks over the main-yard, and no bloody knife to cut\r\nthe seizing. Sheer! or I’ll pitch into you like a shin of beef into a\r\nbeggar’s wallet.”\r\n\r\nIt is often observable, that, in vessels of all kinds, the men who talk\r\nthe most sailor lingo are the least sailor-like in reality. You may\r\nsometimes hear even marines jerk out more salt phrases than the Captain\r\nof the Forecastle himself. On the other hand, when not actively engaged\r\nin his vocation, you would take the best specimen of a seaman for a\r\nlandsman. When you see a fellow yawning about the docks like a\r\nhomeward-bound Indiaman, a long Commodore’s pennant of black ribbon\r\nflying from his mast-head, and fetching up at a grog-shop with a slew\r\nof his hull, as if an Admiral were coming alongside a three-decker in\r\nhis barge; you may put that man down for what man-of-war’s-men call a\r\n_damn-my-eyes-tar_, that is, a humbug. And many damn-my-eyes humbugs\r\nthere are in this man-of-war world of ours.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKWJT799BWSQPGFFD7ZXW","peer_type":"subsection","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J19NC56FFGBCM2SWEZZY","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AMK3JR91S5H4GM7YVH8AD","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:42.098Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:52.744Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
