No sailor permitted to enter in\r\n   his shirt-sleeves. Good order is expected to be maintained. The\r\n   Master-at-arms and Ship’s Corporals to be in attendance to keep the\r\n   peace.\r\n\r\nAt the earnest entreaties of the seamen, Lemsford, the gun-deck poet,\r\nhad been prevailed upon to draw up this bill. And upon this one\r\noccasion his literary abilities were far from being underrated, even by\r\nthe least intellectual person on board. Nor must it be omitted that,\r\nbefore the bill was placarded, Captain Claret, enacting the part of\r\ncensor and grand chamberlain ran over a manuscript copy of “_The Old\r\nWagon Paid Off_,” to see whether it contained anything calculated to\r\nbreed disaffection against lawful authority among the crew. He objected\r\nto some parts, but in the end let them all pass.\r\n\r\nThe morning of The Fourth—most anxiously awaited—dawned clear and fair.\r\nThe breeze was steady; the air bracing cold; and one and all the\r\nsailors anticipated a gleeful afternoon. And thus was falsified the\r\nprophecies of certain old growlers averse to theatricals, who had\r\npredicted a gale of wind that would squash all the arrangements of the\r\ngreen-room.\r\n\r\nAs the men whose regular turns, at the time of the performance, would\r\ncome round to be stationed in the tops, and at the various halyards and\r\nrunning ropes about the spar-deck, could not be permitted to partake in\r\nthe celebration, there accordingly ensued, during the morning, many\r\namusing scenes of tars who were anxious to procure substitutes at their\r\nposts. Through the day, many anxious glances were cast to windward; but\r\nthe weather still promised fair.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQSBWVB672XQ56H8G5AZ","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J19NC56FFGBCM2SWEZZY","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AMGEBXE09QTSB18189489","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AMGEBNDRNA8DV1QEY5VMN","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:39.371Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:45.462Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
