But with all the intrepid\r\neffeminacy of your true dandy, he still continued his Cologne-water\r\nbaths, and sported his lace-bordered handkerchiefs in the very teeth of\r\na tempest. Alas, Selvagee! there was no getting the lavender out of\r\nyou.\r\n\r\nBut Selvagee was no fool. Theoretically he understood his profession;\r\nbut the mere theory of seamanship forms but the thousandth part of what\r\nmakes a seaman. You cannot save a ship by working out a problem in the\r\ncabin; the deck is the field of action.\r\n\r\nWell aware of his deficiency in some things, Selvagee never took the\r\ntrumpet—which is the badge of the deck officer for the time—without a\r\ntremulous movement of the lip, and an earnest inquiring eye to the\r\nwindward. He encouraged those old Tritons, the Quarter-masters, to\r\ndiscourse with him concerning the likelihood of a squall; and often\r\nfollowed their advice as to taking in, or making sail. The smallest\r\nfavours in that way were thankfully received. Sometimes, when all the\r\nNorth looked unusually lowering, by many conversational blandishments,\r\nhe would endeavour to prolong his predecessor’s stay on deck, after\r\nthat officer’s watch had expired. But in fine, steady weather, when the\r\nCaptain would emerge from his cabin, Selvagee might be seen, pacing the\r\npoop with long, bold, indefatigable strides, and casting his eye up\r\naloft with the most ostentatious fidelity.\r\n\r\nBut vain these pretences; he could not deceive. Selvagee! you know very\r\nwell, that if it comes on to blow pretty hard, the First Lieutenant\r\nwill be sure to interfere with his paternal authority. Every man and\r\nevery boy in the frigate knows, Selvagee, that you are no Neptune.\r\n\r\nHow unenviable his situation! His brother officers do not insult him,\r\nto be sure; but sometimes their looks are as daggers. The sailors do\r\nnot laugh at him outright; but of dark nights they jeer, when they\r\nhearken to that mantuamaker’s voice ordering _a strong pull at the main\r\nbrace_, or _hands by the halyards!_ Sometimes, by way of being\r\nterrific, and making the men jump, Selvagee raps out an oath; but the\r\nsoft bomb stuffed with confectioner’s kisses seems to burst like a\r\ncrushed rose-bud diffusing its odours. Selvagee! Selvagee! take a\r\nmain-top-man’s advice; and this cruise over, never more tempt the sea.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AM86ETDGJ81E4AWPWM597","peer_type":"intro","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J19NC56FFGBCM2SWEZZY","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AMEAHKMGXA6RTKR65ST24","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:37.201Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:43.182Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
