The master-at-arms\r\napproached, and immediately demanded the dead man’s bag, which was\r\naccordingly dragged into the bay. Having been laid on the floor, and\r\nwashed with a bucket of water which I drew from the ocean, the body was\r\nthen dressed in a white frock, trowsers, and neckerchief, taken out of\r\nthe bag. While this was going on, the master-at-arms—standing over the\r\noperation with his rattan, and directing myself and mess-mates—indulged\r\nin much discursive levity, intended to manifest his fearlessness of\r\ndeath.\r\n\r\nPierre, who had been a “_chummy_” of Shenly’s, spent much time in tying\r\nthe neckerchief in an elaborate bow, and affectionately adjusting the\r\nwhite frock and trowsers; but the master-at-arms put an end to this by\r\nordering us to carry the body up to the gun-deck. It was placed on the\r\ndeath-board (used for that purpose), and we proceeded with it toward\r\nthe main hatchway, awkwardly crawling under the tiers of hammocks,\r\nwhere the entire watch-below was sleeping. As, unavoidably, we rocked\r\ntheir pallets, the man-of-war’s-men would cry out against us; through\r\nthe mutterings of curses, the corpse reached the hatchway. Here the\r\nboard slipped, and some time was spent in readjusting the body. At\r\nlength we deposited it on the gun-deck, between two guns, and a\r\nunion-jack being thrown over it for a pall, I was left again to watch\r\nby its side.\r\n\r\nI had not been seated on my shot-box three minutes, when the\r\nmessenger-boy passed me on his way forward; presently the slow, regular\r\nstroke of the ship’s great bell was heard, proclaiming through the calm\r\nthe expiration of the watch; it was four o’clock in the morning.\r\n\r\nPoor Shenly! thought I, that sounds like your knell! and here you lie\r\nbecalmed, in the last calm of all!\r\n\r\nHardly had the brazen din died away, when the Boatswain and his mates\r\nmustered round the hatchway, within a yard or two of the corpse, and\r\nthe usual thundering call was given for the watch below to turn out.\r\n\r\n“All the starboard-watch, ahoy! On deck there, below! Wide awake there,\r\nsleepers!”\r\n\r\nBut the dreamless sleeper by my side, who had so often sprung from his\r\nhammock at that summons, moved not a limb; the blue sheet over him lay\r\nunwrinkled.\r\n\r\nA mess-mate of the other watch now came to relieve me; but I told him I\r\nchose to remain where I was till daylight came.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJVA5ZZ974GX4DXFCSWXZ","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J19NC56FFGBCM2SWEZZY","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AME7AN2F5C07XXP9EQHQD","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:37.098Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:53.869Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
