About midnight, as I imagined, I arose and\r\ndrew the slide. The natives, just as I had expected, started up, while\r\nsome of them asked, ‘Arware poo awa, Tommo?’ (where are you going,\r\nTommo?) ‘Wai’ (water) I laconically answered, grasping the calabash. On\r\nhearing my reply they sank back again, and in a minute or two I returned\r\nto my mat, anxiously awaiting the result of the experiment.\r\n\r\nOne after another the savages, turning restlessly, appeared to resume\r\ntheir slumbers, and rejoicing at the stillness which prevailed, I was\r\nabout to rise again from my couch, when I heard a slight rustling--a\r\ndark form was intercepted between me and the doorway--the slide was\r\ndrawn across it, and the individual, whoever he was, returned to\r\nhis mat. This was a sad blow to me; but as it might have aroused the\r\nsuspicions of the islanders to have made another attempt that night, I\r\nwas reluctantly obliged to defer it until the next. Several times after\r\nI repeated the same manoeuvre, but with as little success as before.\r\nAs my pretence for withdrawing from the house was to allay my thirst,\r\nKory-Kory either suspecting some design on my part, or else prompted\r\nby a desire to please me, regularly every evening placed a calabash of\r\nwater by my side.\r\n\r\nEven, under these inauspicious circumstances I again and again renewed\r\nthe attempt, but when I did so, my valet always rose with me, as if\r\ndetermined I should not remove myself from his observation. For\r\nthe present, therefore, I was obliged to abandon the attempt; but I\r\nendeavoured to console myself with the idea that by this mode I might\r\nyet effect my escape.\r\n\r\nShortly after Marnoo’s visit I was reduced to such a state that it was\r\nwith extreme difficulty I could walk, even with the assistance of a\r\nspear, and Kory-Kory, as formerly, was obliged to carry me daily to the\r\nstream.\r\n\r\nFor hours and hours during the warmest part of the day I lay upon my\r\nmat, and while those around me were nearly all dozing away in careless\r\nease, I remained awake, gloomily pondering over the fate which it\r\nappeared now idle for me to resist, when I thought of the loved friends\r\nwho were thousands and thousands of miles from the savage island in\r\nwhich I was held a captive, when I reflected that my dreadful fate would\r\nfor ever be concealed from them, and that with hope deferred they might\r\ncontinue to await my return long after my inanimate form had blended\r\nwith the dust of the valley--I could not repress a shudder of anguish.\r\n\r\nHow vividly is impressed upon my mind every minute feature of the scene\r\nwhich met my view during those long days of suffering and sorrow. At my\r\nrequest my mats were always spread directly facing the door, opposite\r\nwhich, and at a little distance, was the hut of boughs that Marheyo was\r\nbuilding.\r\n\r\nWhenever my gentle Fayaway and Kory-Kory, laying themselves down beside\r\nme, would leave me awhile to uninterrupted repose, I took a strange\r\ninterest in the slightest movements of the eccentric old warrior. All\r\nalone during the stillness of the tropical mid-day, he would pursue his\r\nquiet work, sitting in the shade and weaving together the leaflets of\r\nhis cocoanut branches, or rolling upon his knee the twisted fibres of\r\nbark to form the cords with which he tied together the thatching of\r\nhis tiny house. Frequently suspending his employment, and noticing my\r\nmelancholy eye fixed upon him, he would raise his hand with a gesture\r\nexpressive of deep commiseration, and then moving towards me slowly,\r\nwould enter on tip-toes, fearful of disturbing the slumbering natives,\r\nand, taking the fan from my hand, would sit before me, swaying it gently\r\nto and fro, and gazing earnestly into my face.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJRVR9CWT9ATSR5Y6K7VV","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM8EK5PCXFP84WZDBKY72","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM8EK1JSBXA14REC7ZGGE","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:31.187Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:43.375Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
