As they drew near, the men redoubled their\r\ncries, while the girls, tossing their bare arms in the air, exclaimed\r\nplaintively, ‘Awha! awha! Toby mukee moee!’--Alas! alas! Toby is killed!\r\n\r\nIn a moment the crowd opened, and disclosed the apparently lifeless body\r\nof my companion home between two men, the head hanging heavily against\r\nthe breast of the foremost. The whole face, neck, back, and bosom were\r\ncovered with blood, which still trickled slowly from a wound behind the\r\ntemple. In the midst of the greatest uproar and confusion the body was\r\ncarried into the house and laid on a mat. Waving the natives off to give\r\nroom and air, I bent eagerly over Toby, and, laying my hand upon the\r\nbreast, ascertained that the heart still beat. Overjoyed at this, I\r\nseized a calabash of water, and dashed its contents upon his face, then\r\nwiping away the blood, anxiously examined the wound. It was about three\r\ninches long, and on removing the clotted hair from about it, showed the\r\nskull laid completely bare. Immediately with my knife I cut away the\r\nheavy locks, and bathed the part repeatedly in water.\r\n\r\nIn a few moments Toby revived, and opening his eyes for a second--closed\r\nthem again without speaking. Kory-Kory, who had been kneeling beside me,\r\nnow chafed his limbs gently with the palms of his hands, while a young\r\ngirl at his head kept fanning him, and I still continued to moisten his\r\nlips and brow. Soon my poor comrade showed signs of animation, and I\r\nsucceeded in making him swallow from a cocoanut shell a few mouthfuls of\r\nwater.\r\n\r\nOld Tinor now appeared, holding in her hand some simples she had\r\ngathered, the juice of which she by signs besought me to squeeze into\r\nthe wound. Having done so, I thought it best to leave Toby undisturbed\r\nuntil he should have had time to rally his faculties. Several times he\r\nopened his lips, but fearful for his safety I enjoined silence. In the\r\ncourse of two or three hours, however, he sat up, and was sufficiently\r\nrecovered to tell me what had occurred.\r\n\r\n‘After leaving the house with Marheyo,’ said Toby, ‘we struck across the\r\nvalley, and ascended the opposite heights. Just beyond them, my guide\r\ninformed me, lay the valley of Happar, while along their summits, and\r\nskirting the head of the vale, was my route to Nukuheva. After mounting\r\na little way up the elevation my guide paused, and gave me to understand\r\nthat he could not accompany me any farther, and by various signs\r\nintimated that he was afraid to approach any nearer the territories of\r\nthe enemies of his tribe. He however pointed out my path, which now\r\nlay clearly before me, and bidding me farewell, hastily descended the\r\nmountain.\r\n\r\n‘Quite elated at being so near the Happars, I pushed up the acclivity,\r\nand soon gained its summit. It tapered to a sharp ridge, from whence\r\nI beheld both the hostile valleys. Here I sat down and rested for a\r\nmoment, refreshing myself with my cocoanuts. I was soon again pursuing\r\nmy way along the height, when suddenly I saw three of the islanders, who\r\nmust have just come out of Happar valley, standing in the path ahead of\r\nme. They were each armed with a heavy spear, and one from his appearance\r\nI took to be a chief. They sung out something, I could not understand\r\nwhat, and beckoned me to come on.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ7NG6PG70DYJZZQ91FA","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM7YVH2ZQ4TK1Z989XMZP","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM7YVJRM6HRYH34MBHRQK","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:30.665Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:37.126Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
