It\r\nis sometimes used by a parent to his child, when in the exercise\r\nof parental authority he forbids it to perform a particular action.\r\nAnything opposed to the ordinary customs of the islanders, although not\r\nexpressly prohibited, is said to be ‘taboo’.\r\n\r\nThe Typee language is one very difficult to be acquired; it bears a\r\nclose resemblance to the other Polynesian dialects, all of which show a\r\ncommon origin. The duplication of words, as ‘lumee lumee’, ‘poee poee’,\r\n‘muee muee’, is one of their peculiar features. But another, and a more\r\nannoying one, is the different senses in which one and the same word is\r\nemployed; its various meanings all have a certain connection, which\r\nonly makes the matter more puzzling. So one brisk, lively little word\r\nis obliged, like a servant in a poor family, to perform all sorts of\r\nduties; for instance, one particular combination of syllables expresses\r\nthe ideas of sleep, rest, reclining, sitting, leaning, and all other\r\nthings anywise analogous thereto, the particular meaning being shown\r\nchiefly by a variety of gestures and the eloquent expression of the\r\ncountenance.\r\n\r\nThe intricacy of these dialects is another peculiarity. In the\r\nMissionary College at Lahainaluna, on Mowee, one of the Sandwich\r\nIslands, I saw a tabular exhibition of a Hawiian verb, conjugated\r\nthrough all its moods and tenses.
