There was not the slightest necessity for the\r\ngreater portion of the labour performed by the old lady: but she seemed\r\nto work from some irresistible impulse; her limbs continually swaying to\r\nand fro, as if there were some indefatigable engine concealed within her\r\nbody which kept her in perpetual motion.\r\n\r\nNever suppose that she was a termagant or a shrew for all this; she had\r\nthe kindliest heart in the world, and acted towards me in particular\r\nin a truly maternal manner, occasionally putting some little morsel of\r\nchoice food into my hand, some outlandish kind of savage sweetmeat or\r\npastry, like a doting mother petting a sickly urchin with tarts\r\nand sugar plums. Warm indeed are my remembrances of the dear, good,\r\naffectionate old Tinor!\r\n\r\nBesides the individuals I have mentioned, there belonged to the\r\nhousehold three young men, dissipated, good-for-nothing, roystering\r\nblades of savages, who were either employed in prosecuting love affairs\r\nwith the maidens of the tribe, or grew boozy on ‘arva’ and tobacco in\r\nthe company of congenial spirits, the scapegraces of the valley.\r\n\r\nAmong the permanent inmates of the house were likewise several lovely\r\ndamsels, who instead of thrumming pianos and reading novels, like\r\nmore enlightened young ladies, substituted for these employments the\r\nmanufacture of a fine species of tappa; but for the greater portion of\r\nthe time were skipping from house to house, gadding and gossiping with\r\ntheir acquaintances.\r\n\r\nFrom the rest of these, however, I must except the beauteous nymph\r\nFayaway, who was my peculiar favourite. Her free pliant figure was the\r\nvery perfection of female grace and beauty. Her complexion was a rich\r\nand mantling olive, and when watching the glow upon her cheeks I could\r\nalmost swear that beneath the transparent medium there lurked the\r\nblushes of a faint vermilion.\r\n\r\nThe face of this girl was a rounded oval, and each feature as perfectly\r\nformed as the heart or imagination of man could desire.\r\n\r\nHer full lips, when parted with a smile, disclosed teeth of dazzling\r\nwhiteness and when her rosy mouth opened with a burst of merriment, they\r\nlooked like the milk-white seeds of the ‘arta,’ a fruit of the valley,\r\nwhich, when cleft in twain, shows them reposing in rows on each side,\r\nimbedded in the red and juicy pulp. Her hair of the deepest brown,\r\nparted irregularly in the middle, flowed in natural ringlets over her\r\nshoulders, and whenever she chanced to stoop, fell over and hid from\r\nview her lovely bosom. Gazing into the depths of her strange blue\r\neyes, when she was in a contemplative mood, they seemed most placid yet\r\nunfathomable; but when illuminated by some lively emotion, they beamed\r\nupon the beholder like stars. The hands of Fayaway were as soft and\r\ndelicate as those of any countess; for an entire exemption from rude\r\nlabour marks the girlhood and even prime of a Typee woman’s life. Her\r\nfeet, though wholly exposed, were as diminutive and fairly shaped as\r\nthose which peep from beneath the skirts of a Lima lady’s dress. The\r\nskin of this young creature, from continual ablutions and the use of\r\nmollifying ointments, was inconceivably smooth and soft.\r\n\r\nI may succeed, perhaps, in particularizing some of the individual\r\nfeatures of Fayaway’s beauty, but that general loveliness of appearance\r\nwhich they all contributed to produce I will not attempt to describe.\r\nThe easy unstudied graces of a child of nature like this, breathing from\r\ninfancy an atmosphere of perpetual summer, and nurtured by the simple\r\nfruits of the earth; enjoying a perfect freedom from care and anxiety,\r\nand removed effectually from all injurious tendencies, strike the eye in\r\na manner which cannot be pourtrayed. This picture is no fancy sketch; it\r\nis drawn from the most vivid recollections of the person delineated.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 7"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ7QHJRR79154PWN9CAH","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM7AKD04J0RTG7AX02768","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM7ASAPBSER6YSHMG8BGG","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:30.041Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:36.541Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
