Which resolution was carried out\r\nthough in a time of peace and within not many days’ sail of home. An act\r\nvindicated by a naval court of inquiry subsequently convened ashore.\r\nHistory, and here cited without comment. True, the circumstances on\r\nboard the _Somers_ were different from those on board the _Indomitable_.\r\nBut the urgency felt, well warranted or otherwise, was much the same.\r\n\r\nSays a writer whom few know, ‘Forty years after a battle it is easy for\r\na non-combatant to reason about how it ought to have been fought. It is\r\nanother thing personally and under fire to direct the fighting while\r\ninvolved in the obscuring smoke of it. Much so with respect to other\r\nemergencies involving considerations both practical and moral, and when\r\nit is imperative promptly to act. The greater the fog the more it\r\nimperils the steamer, and speed is put on though at the hazard of\r\nrunning somebody down. Little ween the snug card-players in the cabin of\r\nthe responsibilities of the sleepless man on the bridge.’\r\n\r\nIn brief, Billy Budd was formally convicted and sentenced to be hung at\r\nthe yard-arm in the early morning-watch, it being now night. Otherwise,\r\nas is customary in such cases, the sentence would forthwith have been\r\ncarried out. In war-time on the field or in the fleet, a mortal\r\npunishment decreed by a drum-head court--on the field sometimes decreed\r\nby but a nod from the general--follows without delay on the heel of\r\nconviction without appeal.\r\n\r\n------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n                                  XIX\r\n\r\n\r\nIt was Captain Vere himself who of his own motion communicated the\r\nfinding of the court to the prisoner; for that purpose going to the\r\ncompartment where he was in custody, and bidding the marine there to\r\nwithdraw for the time.\r\n\r\nBeyond the communication of the sentence what took place at this\r\ninterview was never known. But, in view of the character of the twain\r\nbriefly closeted in that state-room, each radically sharing in the rarer\r\nqualities of one nature--so rare, indeed, as to be all but incredible to\r\naverage minds, however much cultivated--some conjectures may be\r\nventured.\r\n\r\nIt would have been in consonance with the spirit of Captain Vere should\r\nhe on this occasion have concealed nothing from the condemned one;\r\nshould he indeed have frankly disclosed to him the part he himself had\r\nplayed in bringing about the decision, at the same time revealing his\r\nactuating motives. On Billy’s side it is not improbable that such a\r\nconfession would have been received in much the same spirit that\r\nprompted it. Not without a sort of joy indeed he might have appreciated\r\nthe brave opinion of him implied in his captain making such a confidant\r\nof him. Nor as to the sentence itself could he have been insensible that\r\nit was imparted to him as to one not afraid to die. Even more may have\r\nbeen. Captain Vere in the end may have developed the passion sometimes\r\nlatent under an exterior stoical or indifferent. He was old enough to\r\nhave been Billy’s father. The austere devotee of military duty, letting\r\nhimself melt back into what remains primeval in our formalised humanity,\r\nmay in the end have caught Billy to his heart, even as Abraham may have\r\ncaught young Isaac on the brink of resolutely offering him up in\r\nobedience to the exacting behest. But there is no telling the\r\nsacrament--seldom if in any case revealed to the gadding world wherever\r\nunder circumstances at all akin to those here attempted to be set\r\nforth--two of great Nature’s nobler order embrace. There is privacy at\r\nthe time, inviolable to the survivor, and holy oblivion, the sequel to\r\neach diviner magnanimity, providentially covers all at last.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 11"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJV0GJ6SDZS7Z24MESH84","peer_type":"segment","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1FFTGRE9J93Z3K29NGY","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM79J7TBXXXGGW090DNMD","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM79Q4QZRR1GG8V0R821K","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:30.007Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:37.115Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
