As soon as they perceived us they fled with\r\nwild screams into the adjoining thickets, like so many startled fawns.\r\nA few moments after the whole valley resounded with savage outcries, and\r\nthe natives came running towards us from every direction.\r\n\r\nHad an army of invaders made an irruption into their territory they\r\ncould not have evinced greater excitement. We were soon completely\r\nencircled by a dense throng, and in their eager desire to behold us they\r\nalmost arrested our progress; an equal number surrounded our youthful\r\nguides, who with amazing volubility appeared to be detailing the\r\ncircumstances which had attended their meeting with us. Every item of\r\nintelligence appeared to redouble the astonishment of the islanders, and\r\nthey gazed at us with inquiring looks.\r\n\r\nAt last we reached a large and handsome building of bamboos, and were by\r\nsigns told to enter it, the natives opening a lane for us through which\r\nto pass; on entering without ceremony, we threw our exhausted frames\r\nupon the mats that covered the floor. In a moment the slight tenement\r\nwas completely full of people, whilst those who were unable to obtain\r\nadmittance gazed at us through its open cane-work.\r\n\r\nIt was now evening, and by the dim light we could just discern the\r\nsavage countenances around us, gleaming with wild curiosity and wonder;\r\nthe naked forms and tattooed limbs of brawny warriors, with here and\r\nthere the slighter figures of young girls, all engaged in a perfect\r\nstorm of conversation, of which we were of course the one only\r\ntheme, whilst our recent guides were fully occupied in answering the\r\ninnumerable questions which every one put to them.
