Was it possible that, after all\r\nour vicissitudes, we were really in the terrible valley of Typee, and\r\nat the mercy of its inmates, a fierce and unrelenting tribe of savages?\r\nTypee or Happar? I shuddered when I reflected that there was no longer\r\nany room for doubt; and that, beyond all hope of escape, we were now\r\nplaced in those very circumstances from the bare thought of which I had\r\nrecoiled with such abhorrence but a few days before. What might not\r\nbe our fearful destiny? To be sure, as yet we had been treated with no\r\nviolence; nay, had been even kindly and hospitably entertained. But what\r\ndependence could be placed upon the fickle passions which sway the bosom\r\nof a savage? His inconstancy and treachery are proverbial. Might it\r\nnot be that beneath these fair appearances the islanders covered some\r\nperfidious design, and that their friendly reception of us might only\r\nprecede some horrible catastrophe? How strongly did these forebodings\r\nspring up in my mind as I lay restlessly upon a couch of mats surrounded\r\nby the dimly revealed forms of those whom I so greatly dreaded!\r\n\r\nFrom the excitement of these fearful thoughts I sank towards morning\r\ninto an uneasy slumber; and on awaking, with a start, in the midst of an\r\nappalling dream, looked up into the eager countenance of a number of the\r\nnatives, who were bending over me.\r\n\r\nIt was broad day; and the house was nearly filled with young females,\r\nfancifully decorated with flowers, who gazed upon me as I rose with\r\nfaces in which childish delight and curiosity were vividly portrayed.\r\nAfter waking Toby, they seated themselves round us on the mats, and gave\r\nfull play to that prying inquisitiveness which time out of mind has been\r\nattributed to the adorable sex.\r\n\r\nAs these unsophisticated young creatures were attended by no jealous\r\nduennas, their proceedings were altogether informal, and void of\r\nartificial restraint. Long and minute was the investigation with which\r\nthey honoured us, and so uproarious their mirth, that I felt infinitely\r\nsheepish; and Toby was immeasurably outraged at their familiarity.\r\n\r\nThese lively young ladies were at the same time wonderfully polite\r\nand humane; fanning aside the insects that occasionally lighted on our\r\nbrows; presenting us with food; and compassionately regarding me in the\r\nmidst of my afflictions. But in spite of all their blandishments, my\r\nfeelings of propriety were exceedingly shocked, for I could but consider\r\nthem as having overstepped the due limits of female decorum.\r\n\r\nHaving diverted themselves to their hearts’ content, our young visitants\r\nnow withdrew, and gave place to successive troops of the other sex, who\r\ncontinued flocking towards the house until near noon; by which time I\r\nhave no doubt that the greater part of the inhabitants of the valley had\r\nbathed themselves in the light of our benignant countenances.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 9"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ78VYYNFBKPK3F8V40N","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM6P7ERDE1EAEGY0HH9K0","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM7AKYGZDCXRRV31QRPYJ","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:29.383Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:36.174Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
