It lay obliquely, with one end\r\nresting on the rock and the other supported by the side of the ravine.\r\nAgainst it we placed in a sloping direction a number of the half decayed\r\nboughs that were strewn about, and covering the whole with twigs and\r\nleaves, awaited the morning’s light beneath such shelter as it afforded.\r\n\r\nDuring the whole of this night the continual roaring of the\r\ncataract--the dismal moaning of the gale through the trees--the\r\npattering of the rain, and the profound darkness, affected my spirits to\r\na degree which nothing had ever before produced. Wet, half famished,\r\nand chilled to the heart with the dampness of the place, and nearly wild\r\nwith the pain I endured, I fairly cowered down to the earth under\r\nthis multiplication of hardships, and abandoned myself to frightful\r\nanticipations of evil; and my companion, whose spirit at last was a good\r\ndeal broken, scarcely uttered a word during the whole night.\r\n\r\nAt length the day dawned upon us, and rising from our miserable pallet,\r\nwe stretched our stiffened joints, and after eating all that remained\r\nof our bread, prepared for the last stage of our journey. I will not\r\nrecount every hair-breadth escape, and every fearful difficulty that\r\noccurred before we succeeded in reaching the bosom of the valley. As I\r\nhave already described similar scenes, it will be sufficient to say that\r\nat length, after great toil and great dangers, we both stood with no\r\nlimbs broken at the head of that magnificent vale which five days before\r\nhad so suddenly burst upon my sight, and almost beneath the shadow of\r\nthose very cliffs from whose summits we had gazed upon the prospect.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 6"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ78FJSGVW77ZGHK0KC9","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM62DP0NX5S891MA5MKCV","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:29.378Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:35.753Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
