I was crossing the Bowling Green in a\r\nsnowstorm not far from Jimmy’s house on the Battery, when I saw a\r\ngentleman come sauntering along, whom I remembered at Jimmy’s table as\r\nhaving been the first to spring to his feet in eager response to the\r\nlady’s toast. Not more brimming the wine in his lifted glass than the\r\nmoisture in his eye on that happy occasion.\r\n\r\nWell, this good gentleman came sailing across the Bowling Green,\r\nswinging a silver-headed ratan; seeing me, he paused, ‘Ah, lad, that was\r\nrare wine Jimmy gave us the other night. Shan’t get any more, though.\r\nHeard the news? Jimmy’s burst. Clean smash, I assure you. Come along\r\ndown to the Coffee-house and I’ll tell you more. And if you say so,\r\nwe’ll arrange over a bottle of claret for a sleighing party to Cato’s\r\nto-night. Come along.’\r\n\r\n‘Thank you,’ said I, ‘I--I--I am engaged.’\r\n\r\nStraight as an arrow I went to Jimmy’s. Upon inquiring for him, the man\r\nat the door told me that his master was not in; nor did he know where he\r\nwas; nor had his master been in the house for forty-eight hours.\r\n\r\nWalking up Broadway again, I questioned passing acquaintances; but\r\nthough each man verified the report, no man could tell where Jimmy was,\r\nand no one seemed to care, until I encountered a merchant, who hinted\r\nthat probably Jimmy, having scraped up from the wreck a snug lump of\r\ncoin, had prudently betaken himself off to parts unknown. The next man I\r\nsaw, a great nabob he was too, foamed at the mouth when I mentioned\r\nJimmy’s name. ‘Rascal; regular scamp, sir, is Jimmy Rose! But there are\r\nkeen fellows after him.’ I afterward heard that this indignant gentleman\r\nhad lost the sum of seventy-five dollars and seventy-five cents\r\nindirectly through Jimmy’s failure. And yet I dare say the share of the\r\ndinners he had eaten at Jimmy’s might more than have balanced that sum,\r\nconsidering that he was something of a wine-bibber, and such wines as\r\nJimmy imported cost a plum or two. Indeed, now that I bethink me, I\r\nrecall how I had more than once observed this same middle-aged\r\ngentleman, and how that toward the close of one of Jimmy’s dinners he\r\nwould sit at the table pretending to be earnestly talking with beaming\r\nJimmy, but all the while, with a half-furtive sort of tremulous\r\neagerness and hastiness, pour down glass after glass of noble wine, as\r\nif now, while Jimmy’s bounteous sun was at meridian, was the time to\r\nmake his selfish hay.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKGP64F1XH83XXH1FTCZJ","peer_type":"subsection","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1FFTGRE9J93Z3K29NGY","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM6NQ0J6P58TDKDYR8XMN","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM6NQPTJ12R79EAPP1BDM","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:29.363Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:42.671Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
