The cruel invasion of their country by Porter\r\nhas alone furnished them with ample provocation; and I can sympathize\r\nin the spirit which prompts the Typee warrior to guard all the passes to\r\nhis valley with the point of his levelled spear, and, standing upon\r\nthe beach, with his back turned upon his green home, to hold at bay the\r\nintruding European.\r\n\r\nAs to the origin of the enmity of this particular clan towards the\r\nneighbouring tribes, I cannot so confidently speak. I will not say that\r\ntheir foes are the aggressors, nor will I endeavour to palliate their\r\nconduct. But surely, if our evil passions must find vent, it is far\r\nbetter to expend them on strangers and aliens, than in the bosom of\r\nthe community in which we dwell. In many polished countries civil\r\ncontentions, as well as domestic enmities, are prevalent, and the same\r\ntime that the most atrocious foreign wars are waged. How much less\r\nguilty, then, are our islanders, who of these three sins are only\r\nchargeable with one, and that the least criminal!\r\n\r\nThe reader will ere long have reason to suspect that the Typees are not\r\nfree from the guilt of cannibalism; and he will then, perhaps, charge me\r\nwith admiring a people against whom so odious a crime is chargeable. But\r\nthis only enormity in their character is not half so horrible as it\r\nis usually described. According to the popular fictions, the crews of\r\nvessels, shipwrecked on some barbarous coast, are eaten alive like so\r\nmany dainty joints by the uncivil inhabitants; and unfortunate voyagers\r\nare lured into smiling and treacherous bays; knocked on the head with\r\noutlandish war-clubs; and served up without any prelimary dressing. In\r\ntruth, so horrific and improbable are these accounts, that many sensible\r\nand well-informed people will not believe that any cannibals exist; and\r\nplace every book of voyages which purports to give any account of them,\r\non the same shelf with Blue Beard and Jack the Giant-Killer. While\r\nothers, implicitly crediting the most extravagant fictions, firmly\r\nbelieve that there are people in the world with tastes so depraved that\r\nthey would infinitely prefer a single mouthful of material humanity to\r\na good dinner of roast beef and plum pudding. But here, Truth, who loves\r\nto be centrally located, is again found between the two extremes; for\r\ncannibalism to a certain moderate extent is practised among several of\r\nthe primitive tribes in the Pacific, but it is upon the bodies of slain\r\nenemies alone, and horrible and fearful as the custom is, immeasurably\r\nas it is to be abhorred and condemned, still I assert that those who\r\nindulge in it are in other respects humane and virtuous.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 5"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJR2518RHM7CX1JZ5VSJG","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM6M5YZGV4KBJWBZJ9G9V","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:29.312Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:42.262Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
