We contrived to make the blood circulate in our benumbed\r\nlimbs by rubbing them vigorously with our hands; and after performing\r\nour ablutions in the stream, and putting on our still wet clothes,\r\nwe began to think it advisable to break our long fast, it being now\r\ntwenty-four hours since we had tasted food.\r\n\r\nAccordingly our day’s ration was brought out, and seating ourselves on a\r\ndetached fragment of rock, we proceeded to discuss it. First we divided\r\nit into two equal portions, and carefully rolling one of them up for our\r\nevening’s repast, divided the remainder again as equally as possible,\r\nand then drew lots for the first choice. I could have placed the morsel\r\nthat fell to my share upon the tip of my finger; but notwithstanding\r\nthis I took care that it should be full ten minutes before I had\r\nswallowed the last crumb. What a true saying it is that ‘appetite\r\nfurnishes the best sauce.’ There was a flavour and a relish to this\r\nsmall particle of food that under other circumstances it would have\r\nbeen impossible for the most delicate viands to have imparted. A copious\r\ndraught of the pure water which flowed at our feet served to complete\r\nthe meal, and after it we rose sensibly refreshed, and prepared for\r\nwhatever might befall us.\r\n\r\nWe now carefully examined the chasm in which we had passed the night.\r\nWe crossed the stream, and gaining the further side of the pool I have\r\nmentioned, discovered proofs that the spot must have been visited by\r\nsome one but a short time previous to our arrival. Further observation\r\nconvinced us that it had been regularly frequented, and, as we\r\nafterwards conjectured from particular indications, for the purpose\r\nof obtaining a certain root, from which the natives obtained a kind of\r\nointment.\r\n\r\nThese discoveries immediately determined us to abandon a place which\r\nhad presented no inducement for us to remain, except the promise of\r\nsecurity; and as we looked about us for the means of ascending again\r\ninto the upper regions, we at last found a practicable part of the rock,\r\nand half an hour’s toil carried us to the summit of the same cliff from\r\nwhich the preceding evening we had descended.\r\n\r\nI now proposed to Toby that instead of rambling about the island,\r\nexposing ourselves to discovery at every turn, we should select some\r\nplace as our fixed abode for as long a period as our food should\r\nhold out, build ourselves a comfortable hut, and be as prudent and\r\ncircumspect as possible. To all this my companion assented, and we at\r\nonce set about carrying the plan into execution.\r\n\r\nWith this view, after exploring without success a little glen near us,\r\nwe crossed several of the ridges of which I have before spoken; and\r\nabout noon found ourselves ascending a long and gradually rising slope,\r\nbut still without having discovered any place adapted to our purpose.\r\nLow and heavy clouds betokened an approaching storm, and we hurried on\r\nto gain a covert in a clump of thick bushes, which appeared to terminate\r\nthe long ascent. We threw ourselves under the lee of these bushes, and\r\npulling up the long grass that grew around, covered ourselves completely\r\nwith it, and awaited the shower.\r\n\r\nBut it did not come as soon as we had expected, and before many minutes\r\nmy companion was fast asleep, and I was rapidly falling into the same\r\nstate of happy forgetfulness.
