You will see me in the morning;’ and advancing to the\r\nedge of the cliff upon which we had been standing, I proceeded to lower\r\nmyself down by the tangled roots which clustered about all the crevices\r\nof the rock. As I had anticipated, Toby, in spite of his previous\r\nremonstrances, followed my example, and dropping himself with the\r\nactivity of a squirrel from point to point, he quickly outstripped\r\nme and effected a landing at the bottom before I had accomplished\r\ntwo-thirds of the descent.\r\n\r\nThe sight that now greeted us was one that will ever be vividly\r\nimpressed upon my mind. Five foaming streams, rushing through as many\r\ngorges, and swelled and turbid by the recent rains, united together in\r\none mad plunge of nearly eighty feet, and fell with wild uproar into a\r\ndeep black pool scooped out of the gloomy looking rocks that lay piled\r\naround, and thence in one collected body dashed down a narrow sloping\r\nchannel which seemed to penetrate into the very bowels of the earth.\r\nOverhead, vast roots of trees hung down from the sides of the ravine\r\ndripping with moisture, and trembling with the concussions produced by\r\nthe fall. It was now sunset, and the feeble uncertain light that found\r\nits way into these caverns and woody depths heightened their strange\r\nappearance, and reminded us that in a short time we should find\r\nourselves in utter darkness.\r\n\r\nAs soon as I had satisfied my curiosity by gazing at this scene, I fell\r\nto wondering how it was that what we had taken for a path should have\r\nconducted us to so singular a place, and began to suspect that after all\r\nI might have been deceived in supposing it to have been a trick\r\nformed by the islanders.
