This was rather an agreeable reflection than\r\notherwise, for it diminished our dread of accidentally meeting with any\r\nof them, and I came to the conclusion that perhaps we could not have\r\nselected a more secure hiding-place than this very spot we had so\r\naccidentally hit upon.\r\n\r\nToby agreed with me in this view of the matter, and we immediately began\r\ngathering together the limbs of trees which lay scattered about, with\r\nthe view of constructing a temporary hut for the night. This we were\r\nobliged to build close to the foot of the cataract, for the current of\r\nwater extended very nearly to the sides of the gorge. The few moments\r\nof light that remained we employed in covering our hut with a species of\r\nbroad-bladed grass that grew in every fissure of the ravine. Our hut,\r\nif it deserved to be called one, consisted of six or eight of the\r\nstraightest branches we could find laid obliquely against the steep wall\r\nof rock, with their lower ends within a foot of the stream. Into the\r\nspace thus covered over we managed to crawl, and dispose our wearied\r\nbodies as best we could.\r\n\r\nShall I ever forget that horrid night! As for poor Toby, I could\r\nscarcely get a word out of him. It would have been some consolation to\r\nhave heard his voice, but he lay shivering the live-long night like a\r\nman afflicted with the palsy, with his knees drawn up to his head, while\r\nhis back was supported against the dripping side of the rock. During\r\nthis wretched night there seemed nothing wanting to complete the perfect\r\nmisery of our condition. The rain descended in such torrents that our\r\npoor shelter proved a mere mockery. In vain did I try to elude the\r\nincessant streams that poured upon me; by protecting one part I only\r\nexposed another, and the water was continually finding some new opening\r\nthrough which to drench us.\r\n\r\nI have had many a ducking in the course of my life, and in general\r\ncared little about it; but the accumulated horrors of that night, the\r\ndeathlike coldness of the place, the appalling darkness and the dismal\r\nsense of our forlorn condition, almost unmanned me.\r\n\r\nIt will not be doubted that the next morning we were early risers, and\r\nas soon as I could catch the faintest glimpse of anything like daylight\r\nI shook my companion by the arm, and told him it was sunrise. Poor Toby\r\nlifted up his head, and after a moment’s pause said, in a husky voice,\r\n‘Then, shipmate, my toplights have gone out, for it appears darker now\r\nwith my eyes open that it did when they were shut.’\r\n\r\n‘Nonsense!’ exclaimed I; ‘You are not awake yet.’\r\n\r\n‘Awake!’ roared Toby in a rage, ‘awake! You mean to insinuate I’ve been\r\nasleep, do you? It is an insult to a man to suppose he could sleep in\r\nsuch an infernal place as this.’\r\n\r\nBy the time I had apologized to my friend for having misconstrued his\r\nsilence, it had become somewhat more light, and we crawled out of our\r\nlair. The rain had ceased, but everything around us was dripping with\r\nmoisture. We stripped off our saturated garments, and wrung them as dry\r\nas we could. We contrived to make the blood circulate in our benumbed\r\nlimbs by rubbing them vigorously with our hands; and after performing\r\nour ablutions in the stream, and putting on our still wet clothes,\r\nwe began to think it advisable to break our long fast, it being now\r\ntwenty-four hours since we had tasted food.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 5"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ78KQRA8D5YM8JFQ7HZ","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM5CZD3HEA445R5VEPM8D","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM5CZQYQM4N7Y0N5YTYXX","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:28.063Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:34.798Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
