For the remainder of that day we resolved to fast, as we had been\r\nfortified by a breakfast in the morning; and now starting again to our\r\nfeet, we looked about us for a shelter during the night, which, from the\r\nappearance of the heavens, promised to be a dark and tempestuous one.\r\n\r\nThere was no place near us which would in any way answer our purpose,\r\nso turning our backs upon Nukuheva, we commenced exploring the unknown\r\nregions which lay upon the other side of the mountain.\r\n\r\nIn this direction, as far as our vision extended, not a sign of life,\r\nnor anything that denoted even the transient residence of man, could be\r\nseen. The whole landscape seemed one unbroken solitude, the interior of\r\nthe island having apparently been untenanted since the morning of the\r\ncreation; and as we advanced through this wilderness, our voices\r\nsounded strangely in our ears, as though human accents had never before\r\ndisturbed the fearful silence of the place, interrupted only by the low\r\nmurmurings of distant waterfalls.\r\n\r\nOur disappointment, however, in not finding the various fruits with\r\nwhich we had intended to regale ourselves during our stay in these\r\nwilds, was a good deal lessened by the consideration that from this very\r\ncircumstance we should be much less exposed to a casual meeting with the\r\nsavage tribes about us, who we knew always dwelt beneath the shadows of\r\nthose trees which supplied them with food.\r\n\r\nWe wandered along, casting eager glances into every bush we passed,\r\nuntil just as we had succeeded in mounting one of the many ridges that\r\nintersected the ground, I saw in the grass before me something like an\r\nindistinctly traced footpath, which appeared to lead along the top of\r\nthe ridge, and to descend--with it into a deep ravine about half a mile\r\nin advance of us.\r\n\r\nRobinson Crusoe could not have been more startled at the footprint in\r\nthe sand than we were at this unwelcome discovery. My first impulse was\r\nto make as rapid a retreat as possible, and bend our steps in some\r\nother direction; but our curiosity to see whither this path might lead,\r\nprompted us to pursue it. So on we went, the track becoming more and\r\nmore visible the farther we proceeded, until it conducted us to the\r\nverge of the ravine, where it abruptly terminated.\r\n\r\n‘And so,’ said Toby, peering down into the chasm, ‘everyone that travels\r\nthis path takes a jump here, eh?’\r\n\r\n‘Not so,’ said I, ‘for I think they might manage to descend without it;\r\nwhat say you,--shall we attempt the feat?’\r\n\r\n‘And what, in the name of caves and coal-holes, do you expect to find at\r\nthe bottom of that gulf but a broken neck--why it looks blacker than our\r\nship’s hold, and the roar of those waterfalls down there would batter\r\none’s brains to pieces.’\r\n\r\n‘Oh, no, Toby,’ I exclaimed, laughing; ‘but there’s something to be seen\r\nhere, that’s plain, or there would have been no path, and I am resolved\r\nto find out what it is.’\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ78KQRA8D5YM8JFQ7HZ","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM5CHF9QC74C8CTPP71E5","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM5CZD3HEA445R5VEPM8D","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:28.051Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:34.589Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
