After an hour employed in this unpleasant kind\r\nof locomotion, we started to our feet again and pursued our way boldly\r\nalong the crest of the ridge.\r\n\r\nThis salient spur of the lofty elevations that encompassed the bay rose\r\nwith a sharp angle from the valleys at its base, and presented, with the\r\nexception of a few steep acclivities, the appearance of a vast inclined\r\nplane, sweeping down towards the sea from the heights in the distance.\r\nWe had ascended it near the place of its termination and at its lowest\r\npoint, and now saw our route to the mountains distinctly defined along\r\nits narrow crest, which was covered with a soft carpet of verdure, and\r\nwas in many parts only a few feet wide.\r\n\r\nElated with the success which had so far attended our enterprise, and\r\ninvigorated by the refreshing atmosphere we now inhaled, Toby and I in\r\nhigh spirits were making our way rapidly along the ridge, when suddenly\r\nfrom the valleys below which lay on either side of us we heard the\r\ndistant shouts of the natives, who had just descried us, and to whom our\r\nfigures, brought in bold relief against the sky, were plainly revealed.\r\n\r\nGlancing our eyes into these valleys, we perceived their savage\r\ninhabitants hurrying to and fro, seemingly under the influence of some\r\nsudden alarm, and appearing to the eye scarcely bigger than so many\r\npigmies; while their white thatched dwellings, dwarfed by the distance,\r\nlooked like baby-houses. As we looked down upon the islanders from our\r\nlofty elevation, we experienced a sense of security; feeling confident\r\nthat, should they undertake a pursuit, it would, from the start we\r\nnow had, prove entirely fruitless, unless they followed us into the\r\nmountains, where we knew they cared not to venture.\r\n\r\nHowever, we thought it as well to make the most of our time; and\r\naccordingly, where the ground would admit of it, we ran swiftly along\r\nthe summit of the ridge, until we were brought to a stand by a steep\r\ncliff, which at first seemed to interpose an effectual barrier to our\r\nfarther advance. By dint of much hard scrambling however, and at some\r\nrisk to our necks, we at last surmounted it, and continued our fight\r\nwith unabated celerity.\r\n\r\nWe had left the beach early in the morning, and after an uninterrupted,\r\nthough at times difficult and dangerous ascent, during which we had\r\nnever once turned our faces to the sea, we found ourselves, about\r\nthree hours before sunset, standing on the top of what seemed to be the\r\nhighest land on the island, an immense overhanging cliff composed of\r\nbasaltic rocks, hung round with parasitical plants.
