To the material\r\neye thou makest but little progress; but with the eye of faith, I see\r\nthy canoe cleaving the bright waves, which die away on those dimly\r\nlooming shores of Paradise.\r\n\r\nThis strange superstition affords another evidence of the fact, that\r\nhowever ignorant man may be, he still feels within him his immortal\r\nspirit yearning, after the unknown future.\r\n\r\nAlthough the religious theories of the islands were a complete mystery\r\nto me, their practical every-day operation could not be concealed. I\r\nfrequently passed the little temples reposing in the shadows of the\r\ntaboo groves and beheld the offerings--mouldy fruit spread out upon\r\na rude altar, or hanging in half-decayed baskets around some uncouth\r\njolly-looking image; I was present during the continuance of the\r\nfestival; I daily beheld the grinning idols marshalled rank and file in\r\nthe Hoolah Hoolah ground, and was often in the habit of meeting\r\nthose whom I supposed to be the priests. But the temples seemed to be\r\nabandoned to solitude; the festival had been nothing more than a jovial\r\nmingling of the tribe; the idols were quite harmless as any other logs\r\nof wood; and the priests were the merriest dogs in the valley.\r\n\r\nIn fact religious affairs in Typee were at a very low ebb: all such\r\nmatters sat very lightly upon the thoughtless inhabitants; and, in the\r\ncelebration of many of their strange rites, they appeared merely to seek\r\na sort of childish amusement.\r\n\r\nA curious evidence of this was given in a remarkable ceremony in which I\r\nfrequently saw Mehevi and several other chefs and warriors of note take\r\npart; but never a single female.\r\n\r\nAmong those whom I looked upon as forming the priesthood of the valley,\r\nthere was one in particular who often attracted my notice, and whom\r\nI could not help regarding as the head of the order. He was a noble\r\nlooking man, in the prime of his life, and of a most benignant aspect.\r\nThe authority this man, whose name was Kolory, seemed to exercise over\r\nthe rest, the episcopal part he took in the Feast of Calabashes, his\r\nsleek and complacent appearance, the mystic characters which were\r\ntattooed upon his chest, and above all the mitre he frequently wore,\r\nin the shape of a towering head-dress, consisting of part of a cocoanut\r\nbranch, the stalk planted uprightly on his brow, and the leaflets\r\ngathered together and passed round the temples and behind the ears, all\r\nthese pointed him out as Lord Primate of Typee. Kolory was a sort of\r\nKnight Templar--a soldier-priest; for he often wore the dress of a\r\nMarquesan warrior, and always carried a long spear, which, instead of\r\nterminating in a paddle at the lower end, after the general fashion of\r\nthese weapons, was curved into a heathenish-looking little image. This\r\ninstrument, however, might perhaps have been emblematic of his double\r\nfunctions. With one end in carnal combat he transfixed the enemies of\r\nhis tribe; and with the other as a pastoral crook he kept in order his\r\nspiritual flock. But this is not all I have to say about Kolory.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 5"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJR250Y3B8PH384FGZ4CM","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM56F2KE3463PJ9NSAJ4R","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM56KBZQ6ACMKNCV6GXQX","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:27.855Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:40.670Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
