Reasonable discontent growing out of practical\r\ngrievances in the fleet had been ignited into irrational combustion as\r\nby live cinders blown across the Channel from France in flames.\r\n\r\nThe event converted into irony for a time those spirited strains of\r\nDibdin--as a song-writer no mean auxiliary to the English Government--at\r\nthis European conjuncture, strains celebrating, among other things, the\r\npatriotic devotion of the British tar--\r\n\r\n                 ‘And as for my life, ’tis the King’s!’\r\n\r\nSuch an episode in the Island’s grand naval story her naval historians\r\nnaturally abridge; one of them (G. P. R. James) candidly acknowledging\r\nthat fain would he pass it over did not ‘impartiality forbid\r\nfastidiousness.’ And yet his mention is less a narration than a\r\nreference, having to do hardly at all with details. Nor are these\r\nreadily to be found in the libraries. Like some other events in every\r\nage befalling states everywhere, including America, the Great Mutiny was\r\nof such character that national pride along with views of policy would\r\nfain shade it off into the historical background. Such events cannot be\r\nignored, but there is a considerate way of historically treating them.\r\nIf a well-constituted individual refrains from blazoning aught amiss or\r\ncalamitous in his family, a nation in the like circumstance may without\r\nreproach be equally discreet.\r\n\r\nThough after parleyings between Government and the ringleaders, and\r\nconcessions by the former as to some glaring abuses, the first\r\nuprising--that at Spithead--with difficulty was put down, or matters for\r\na time pacified; yet at the Nore the unforeseen renewal of insurrection\r\non a yet larger scale, and emphasised in the conferences that ensued by\r\ndemands deemed by the authorities not only inadmissible but aggressively\r\ninsolent, indicated, if the red flag did not sufficiently do so, what\r\nwas the spirit animating the men. Final suppression, however, there was;\r\nbut only made possible perhaps by the unswerving loyalty of the marine\r\ncorps, and a voluntary resumption of loyalty among influential sections\r\nof the crews. To some extent the Nore Mutiny may be regarded as\r\nanalogous to the distempering irruption of contagious fever in a frame\r\nconstitutionally sound, and which anon throws it off.\r\n\r\nAt all events, among these thousands of mutineers were some of the tars\r\nwho not so very long afterwards--whether wholly prompted thereto by\r\npatriotism, or pugnacious instinct, or by both--helped to win a coronet\r\nfor Nelson at the Nile, and the naval crown of crowns for him at\r\nTrafalgar. To the mutineers those battles, and especially Trafalgar,\r\nwere a plenary absolution, and a grand one; for that which goes to make\r\nup scenic naval display is heroic magnificence in arms. Those battles,\r\nespecially Trafalgar, stand unmatched in human annals.\r\n\r\n------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJTEV1G6A1HS77NN7N48S","peer_type":"section","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1FFTGRE9J93Z3K29NGY","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM4MYSYX4FC9KK5G9GJ4C","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:27.297Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:34.636Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
