The idea of being\r\ntaken and brought back ignominiously to the ship was so inexpressibly\r\nrepulsive to me, that I was determined by no hasty and imprudent\r\nmeasures to render such an event probable.\r\n\r\nI knew that our worthy captain, who felt, such a paternal solicitude\r\nfor the welfare of his crew, would not willingly consent that one of his\r\nbest hands should encounter the perils of a sojourn among the natives\r\nof a barbarous island; and I was certain that in the event of my\r\ndisappearance, his fatherly anxiety would prompt him to offer, by way of\r\na reward, yard upon yard of gaily printed calico for my apprehension.\r\nHe might even have appreciated my services at the value of a musket, in\r\nwhich case I felt perfectly certain that the whole population of the\r\nbay would be immediately upon my track, incited by the prospect of so\r\nmagnificent a bounty.\r\n\r\nHaving ascertained the fact before alluded to, that the islanders,--from\r\nmotives of precaution, dwelt altogether in the depths of the valleys,\r\nand avoided wandering about the more elevated portions of the shore,\r\nunless bound on some expedition of war or plunder, I concluded that if\r\nI could effect unperceived a passage to the mountain, I might easily\r\nremain among them, supporting myself by such fruits as came in my way\r\nuntil the sailing of the ship, an event of which I could not fail to be\r\nimmediately apprised, as from my lofty position I should command a view\r\nof the entire harbour.\r\n\r\nThe idea pleased me greatly. It seemed to combine a great deal of\r\npracticability with no inconsiderable enjoyment in a quiet way; for how\r\ndelightful it would be to look down upon the detested old vessel from\r\nthe height of some thousand feet, and contrast the verdant scenery about\r\nme with the recollection of her narrow decks and gloomy forecastle! Why,\r\nit was really refreshing even to think of it; and so I straightway fell\r\nto picturing myself seated beneath a cocoanut tree on the brow of the\r\nmountain, with a cluster of plantains within easy reach, criticizing her\r\nnautical evolutions as she was working her way out of the harbour.\r\n\r\nTo be sure there was one rather unpleasant drawback to these agreeable\r\nanticipations--the possibility of falling in with a foraging party of\r\nthese same bloody-minded Typees, whose appetites, edged perhaps by the\r\nair of so elevated a region, might prompt them to devour one. This, I\r\nmust confess, was a most disagreeable view of the matter.\r\n\r\nJust to think of a party of these unnatural gourmands taking it into\r\ntheir heads to make a convivial meal of a poor devil, who would have\r\nno means of escape or defence: however, there was no help for it. I was\r\nwilling to encounter some risks in order to accomplish my object, and\r\ncounted much upon my ability to elude these prowling cannibals amongst\r\nthe many coverts which the mountains afforded.
