The unfortunate queen Pomare,\r\nincapable of averting the impending calamity, terrified at the arrogance\r\nof the insolent Frenchman, and driven at last to despair, fled by night\r\nin a canoe to Emio.\r\n\r\nDuring the continuance of the panic there occurred an instance of\r\nfeminine heroism that I cannot omit to record.\r\n\r\nIn the grounds of the famous missionary consul, Pritchard, then absent\r\nin London, the consular flag of Britain waved as usual during the day,\r\nfrom a lofty staff planted within a few yards of the beach, and in full\r\nview of the frigate. One morning an officer, at the head of a party\r\nof men, presented himself at the verandah of Mr Pritchard’s house, and\r\ninquired in broken English for the lady his wife. The matron soon made\r\nher appearance; and the polite Frenchman, making one of his best bows,\r\nand playing gracefully with the aiguillettes that danced upon his\r\nbreast, proceeded in courteous accents to deliver his mission. ‘The\r\nadmiral desired the flag to be hauled down--hoped it would be perfectly\r\nagreeable--and his men stood ready to perform the duty.’ ‘Tell the\r\nPirate your master,’ replied the spirited Englishwoman, pointing to\r\nthe staff, ‘that if he wishes to strike these colours, he must come and\r\nperform the act himself; I will suffer no one else to do it.’ The lady\r\nthen bowed haughtily and withdrew into the house. As the discomfited\r\nofficer slowly walked away, he looked up to the flag, and perceived that\r\nthe cord by which it was elevated to its place, led from the top of the\r\nstaff, across the lawn, to an open upper window of the mansion, where\r\nsat the lady from whom he had just parted, tranquilly engaged in\r\nknitting. Was that flag hauled down? Mrs Pritchard thinks not; and\r\nRear-Admiral Du Petit Thouars is believed to be of the same opinion.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJPECS9VN6EYZC9FBTYQP","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM4119FVQ647FKR0AAVW0","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:26.657Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:33.436Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
