I will, therefore, as briefly as I can,\r\ndescribe one of our days in the valley.\r\n\r\nTo begin with the morning. We were not very early risers--the sun would\r\nbe shooting his golden spikes above the Happar mountain, ere I threw\r\naside my tappa robe, and girding my long tunic about my waist, sallied\r\nout with Fayaway and Kory-Kory, and the rest of the household, and bent\r\nmy steps towards the stream. Here we found congregated all those who\r\ndwelt in our section of the valley; and here we bathed with them. The\r\nfresh morning air and the cool flowing waters put both soul and body in\r\na glow, and after a half-hour employed in this recreation, we sauntered\r\nback to the house--Tinor and Marheyo gathering dry sticks by the way\r\nfor fire-wood; some of the young men laying the cocoanut trees under\r\ncontribution as they passed beneath them; while Kory-Kory played his\r\noutlandish pranks for my particular diversion, and Fayaway and I, not\r\narm in arm to be sure, but sometimes hand in hand, strolled along, with\r\nfeelings of perfect charity for all the world, and especial good-will\r\ntowards each other.\r\n\r\nOur morning meal was soon prepared. The islanders are somewhat\r\nabstemious at this repast; reserving the more powerful efforts of\r\ntheir appetite to a later period of the day. For my own part, with the\r\nassistance of my valet, who, as I have before stated, always officiated\r\nas spoon on these occasions, I ate sparingly from one of Tinor’s\r\ntrenchers, of poee-poee; which was devoted exclusively for my own use,\r\nbeing mixed with the milky meat of ripe cocoanut. A section of a roasted\r\nbread-fruit, a small cake of ‘Amar’, or a mess of ‘Cokoo,’ two or three\r\nbananas, or a mammee-apple; an annuee, or some other agreeable and\r\nnutritious fruit served from day to day to diversify the meal, which was\r\nfinished by tossing off the liquid contents of a young cocoanut or two.\r\n\r\nWhile partaking of this simple repast, the inmates of Marheyo’s house,\r\nafter the style of the ancient Romans, reclined in sociable groups upon\r\nthe divan of mats, and digestion was promoted by cheerful conversation.\r\n\r\nAfter the morning meal was concluded, pipes were lighted; and among them\r\nmy own especial pipe, a present from the noble Mehevi.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJR1KKRF4W20PAGWA82S1","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM40FNH837P8NQKW3FZD1","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:26.639Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:39.123Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
