At this declaration of the exalted opinion I had formed of him,\r\nhe appeared vastly gratified, and gave me to understand that he had\r\npurposely behaved in that manner, in order to increase my astonishment,\r\nas soon as he should see proper to address me.\r\n\r\nMarnoo now sought to learn my version of the story as to how I came\r\nto be an inmate of the Typee valley. When I related to him the\r\ncircumstances under which Toby and I had entered it, he listened\r\nwith evident interest; but as soon as I alluded to the absence, yet\r\nunaccounted for, of my comrade, he endeavoured to change the subject, as\r\nif it were something he desired not to agitate. It seemed, indeed, as\r\nif everything connected with Toby was destined to beget distrust and\r\nanxiety in my bosom. Notwithstanding Marnoo’s denial of any knowledge\r\nof his fate, I could not avoid suspecting that he was deceiving me; and\r\nthis suspicion revived those frightful apprehensions with regard to my\r\nown fate, which, for a short time past, had subsided in my breast.\r\n\r\nInfluenced by these feelings, I now felt a strong desire to avail myself\r\nof the stranger’s protection, and under his safeguard to return to\r\nNukuheva. But as soon as I hinted at this, he unhesitatingly pronounced\r\nit to be entirely impracticable; assuring me that the Typees would never\r\nconsent to my leaving the valley. Although what he said merely confirmed\r\nthe impression which I had before entertained, still it increased\r\nmy anxiety to escape from a captivity which, however endurable, nay,\r\ndelightful it might be in some respects, involved in its issues a fate\r\nmarked by the most frightful contingencies.\r\n\r\nI could not conceal from my mind that Toby had been treated in the same\r\nfriendly manner as I had been, and yet all their kindness terminated\r\nwith his mysterious disappearance. Might not the same fate await me?--a\r\nfate too dreadful to think of. Stimulated by these considerations,\r\nI urged anew my request to Marnoo; but he only set forth in stronger\r\ncolours the impossibility of my escape, and repeated his previous\r\ndeclaration that the Typees would never be brought to consent to my\r\ndeparture.\r\n\r\nWhen I endeavoured to learn from him the motives which prompted them to\r\nhold me a prisoner, Marnoo again presumed that mysterious tone which had\r\ntormented me with apprehension when I had questioned him with regard to\r\nthe fate of my companion.\r\n\r\nThus repulsed, in a manner which only served, by arousing the most\r\ndreadful forebodings, to excite me to renewed attempts, I conjured him\r\nto intercede for me with the natives, and endeavour to procure their\r\nconsent to my leaving them. To this he appeared strongly averse; but,\r\nyielding at last to my importunities, he addressed several of the\r\nchiefs, who with the rest had been eyeing us intently during the whole\r\nof our conversation. His petition, however, was at once met with the\r\nmost violent disapprobation, manifesting itself in angry glances and\r\ngestures, and a perfect torrent of passionate words, directed to both\r\nhim and myself.
