Many a time\r\nafterwards was this feat repeated.\r\n\r\nIf the reader has not observed ere this that I was the declared admirer\r\nof Miss Fayaway, all I can say is that he is little conversant with\r\naffairs of the heart, and I certainly shall not trouble myself to\r\nenlighten him any farther. Out of the calico I had brought from the ship\r\nI made a dress for this lovely girl. In it she looked, I must confess,\r\nsomething like an opera-dancer.\r\n\r\nThe drapery of the latter damsel generally commences a little above\r\nthe elbows, but my island beauty’s began at the waist, and terminated\r\nsufficiently far above the ground to reveal the most bewitching ankle in\r\nthe universe.\r\n\r\nThe day that Fayaway first wore this robe was rendered memorable by a\r\nnew acquaintance being introduced to me. In the afternoon I was lying\r\nin the house when I heard a great uproar outside; but being by this time\r\npretty well accustomed to the wild halloos which were almost continually\r\nringing through the valley, I paid little attention to it, until old\r\nMarheyo, under the influence of some strange excitement, rushed into my\r\npresence and communicated the astounding tidings, ‘Marnoo pemi!’ which\r\nbeing interpreted, implied that an individual by the name of Marnoo was\r\napproaching.\r\n\r\nMy worthy old friend evidently expected that this intelligence would\r\nproduce a great effect upon me, and for a time he stood earnestly\r\nregarding me, as if curious to see how I should conduct myself, but as\r\nI remained perfectly unmoved, the old gentleman darted out of the house\r\nagain, in as great a hurry as he had entered it.\r\n\r\n‘Marnoo, Marnoo,’ cogitated I, ‘I have never heard that name before.\r\nSome distinguished character, I presume, from the prodigious riot the\r\nnatives are making;’ the tumultuous noise drawing nearer and nearer\r\nevery moment, while ‘Marnoo!--Marnoo!’ was shouted by every tongue.\r\n\r\nI made up my mind that some savage warrior of consequence, who had\r\nnot yet enjoyed the honour of an audience, was desirous of paying his\r\nrespects on the present occasion.
