The assertion was unfounded; but were\r\nit otherwise, it might be met by stating that their language is almost\r\nentirely destitute of terms to express the delightful ideas conveyed by\r\nour endless catalogue of civilized crimes.\r\n\r\nIn the altered frame of mind to which I have referred, every object that\r\npresented itself to my notice in the valley struck me in a new light,\r\nand the opportunities I now enjoyed of observing the manners of its\r\ninmates, tended to strengthen my favourable impressions. One peculiarity\r\nthat fixed my admiration was the perpetual hilarity reigning through the\r\nwhole extent of the vale.\r\n\r\nThere seemed to be no cares, griefs, troubles, or vexations, in all\r\nTypee. The hours tripped along as gaily as the laughing couples down a\r\ncountry dance.\r\n\r\nThere were none of those thousand sources of irritation that the\r\ningenuity of civilized man has created to mar his own felicity. There\r\nwere no foreclosures of mortgages, no protested notes, no bills payable,\r\nno debts of honour in Typee; no unreasonable tailors and shoemakers\r\nperversely bent on being paid; no duns of any description and battery\r\nattorneys, to foment discord, backing their clients up to a quarrel,\r\nand then knocking their heads together; no poor relations, everlastingly\r\noccupying the spare bed-chamber, and diminishing the elbow room at the\r\nfamily table; no destitute widows with their children starving on the\r\ncold charities of the world; no beggars; no debtors’ prisons; no proud\r\nand hard-hearted nabobs in Typee; or to sum up all in one word--no\r\nMoney! ‘That root of all evil’ was not to be found in the valley.\r\n\r\nIn this secluded abode of happiness there were no cross old women, no\r\ncruel step-dames, no withered spinsters, no lovesick maidens, no sour\r\nold bachelors, no inattentive husbands, no melancholy young men, no\r\nblubbering youngsters, and no squalling brats. All was mirth, fun and\r\nhigh good humour. Blue devils, hypochondria, and doleful dumps, went and\r\nhid themselves among the nooks and crannies of the rocks.\r\n\r\nHere you would see a parcel of children frolicking together the\r\nlive-long day, and no quarrelling, no contention, among them. The same\r\nnumber in our own land could not have played together for the space of\r\nan hour without biting or scratching one another. There you might have\r\nseen a throng of young females, not filled with envyings of each other’s\r\ncharms, nor displaying the ridiculous affectations of gentility, nor\r\nyet moving in whalebone corsets, like so many automatons, but free,\r\ninartificially happy, and unconstrained.\r\n\r\nThere were some spots in that sunny vale where they would frequently\r\nresort to decorate themselves with garlands of flowers. To have seen\r\nthem reclining beneath the shadows of one of the beautiful groves;\r\nthe ground about them strewn with freshly gathered buds and blossoms,\r\nemployed in weaving chaplets and necklaces, one would have thought\r\nthat all the train of Flora had gathered together to keep a festival in\r\nhonour of their mistress.\r\n\r\nWith the young men there seemed almost always some matter of diversion\r\nor business on hand that afforded a constant variety of enjoyment. But\r\nwhether fishing, or carving canoes, or polishing their ornaments, never\r\nwas there exhibited the least sign of strife or contention among them.\r\nAs for the warriors, they maintained a tranquil dignity of demeanour,\r\njourneying occasionally from house to house, where they were always sure\r\nto be received with the attention bestowed upon distinguished guests.\r\nThe old men, of whom there were many in the vale, seldom stirred from\r\ntheir mats, where they would recline for hours and hours, smoking and\r\ntalking to one another with all the garrulity of age.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJR1YVNRFP81YQ12CYVKC","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM2SGSQFB7KBPA0W2YZKP","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM2SG3B3HKPS9QPME0QZX","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:25.392Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:38.099Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
