But this fiery gentleman, so\r\nhandy with his spear, had the delicacy, it seemed, to keep out of view.\r\nCertainly the sight of him would not have been any added inducement to\r\nmaking a stay in the valley,--some of the afternoon loungers in Happar\r\nhaving politely urged Toby to spend a few days with them,--there was a\r\nfeast coming on. He, however, declined.\r\n\r\nAll this while the young Typee stuck to Jimmy like his shadow, and\r\nthough as lively a dog as any of his tribe, he was now as meek as\r\na lamb, never opening his mouth except to eat. Although some of the\r\nHappars looked queerly at him, others were more civil, and seemed\r\ndesirous of taking him abroad and showing him the valley. But the Typee\r\nwas not to be cajoled in that way. How many yards he would have to\r\nremove from Jimmy before the taboo would be powerless, it would be hard\r\nto tell, but probably he himself knew to a fraction.\r\n\r\nOn the promise of a red cotton handkerchief, and something else which he\r\nkept secret, this poor fellow had undertaken a rather ticklish journey,\r\nthough, as far as Toby could ascertain, it was something that had never\r\nhappened before.\r\n\r\nThe island-punch--arva--was brought in at the conclusion of the repast,\r\nand passed round in a shallow calabash.\r\n\r\nNow my comrade, while seated in the Happar house, began to feel more\r\ntroubled than ever at leaving me; indeed, so sad did he feel that he\r\ntalked about going back to the valley, and wanted Jimmy to escort him\r\nas far as the mountains. But the sailor would not listen to him, and, by\r\nway of diverting his thoughts, pressed him to drink of the arva. Knowing\r\nits narcotic nature, he refused; but Jimmy said he would have something\r\nmixed with it, which would convert it into an innocent beverage that\r\nwould inspirit them for the rest of their journey. So at last he was\r\ninduced to drink of it, and its effects were just as the sailor had\r\npredicted; his spirits rose at once, and all his gloomy thoughts left\r\nhim.\r\n\r\nThe old rover now began to reveal his true character, though he was\r\nhardly suspected at the time. ‘If I get you off to a ship,’ said he,\r\n‘you will surely give a poor fellow something for saving you.’ In short,\r\nbefore they left the house, he made Toby promise that he would give him\r\nfive Spanish dollars if he succeeded in getting any part of his wages\r\nadvanced from the vessel, aboard of which they were going; Toby,\r\nmoreover, engaging to reward him still further, as soon as my\r\ndeliverance was accomplished.\r\n\r\nA little while after this they started again, accompanied by many of the\r\nnatives, and going up the valley, took a steep path near its head,\r\nwhich led to Nukuheva. Here the Happars paused and watched them as they\r\nascended the mountain, one group of bandit-looking fellows, shaking\r\ntheir spears and casting threatening glances at the poor Typee, whose\r\nheart as well as heels seemed much the lighter when he came to look down\r\nupon them.\r\n\r\nOn gaining the heights once more, their way led for a time along several\r\nridges covered with enormous ferns. At last they entered upon a wooded\r\ntract, and here they overtook a party of Nukuheva natives, well armed,\r\nand carrying bundles of long poles. Jimmy seemed to know them all very\r\nwell, and stopped for a while, and had a talk about the ‘Wee-Wees’, as\r\nthe people of Nukuheva call the Monsieurs.\r\n\r\nThe party with the poles were King Mowanna’s men, and by his orders they\r\nhad been gathering them in the ravines for his allies the French.\r\n\r\nLeaving these fellows to trudge on with their loads, Toby and his\r\ncompanions now pushed forward again, as the sun was already low in the\r\nwest. They came upon the valleys of Nukuheva on one side of the bay,\r\nwhere the highlands slope off into the sea. The men-of-war were still\r\nlying in the harbour, and as Toby looked down upon them, the strange\r\nevents which had happened so recently, seemed all a dream.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 7"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJRVDJJNJKJG4WZCP7VKN","peer_type":"backmatter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JYRSHWXR7JM0HYS9D4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM2S1N3Q5EQAN70VS5VSH","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM2S12D4X2FRGBN3E4VSM","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:25.377Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:44.120Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
