Yet little they heed. Away\r\nthey go; every fish for itself, and any fish for Samoa.\r\n\r\nAt last the poor Boneeta is seen no more. The myriad fins swim on; a\r\nlonely waste, where the lost one drops behind.\r\n\r\nStrange fish! All the live-long day, they were there by our side; and\r\nat night still tarried and shone; more crystal and scaly in the pale\r\nmoonbeams, than in the golden glare of the sun.\r\n\r\nHow prettily they swim; all silver life; darting hither and thither\r\nbetween their long ranks, and touching their noses, and scraping\r\nacquaintance. No mourning they wear for the Boneeta left far astern;\r\nnor for those so cruelly killed by Samoa. No, no; all is glee, fishy\r\nglee, and frolicking fun; light hearts and light fins; gay backs and\r\ngay spirits.—Swim away, swim away! my merry fins all. Let us roam the\r\nflood; let us follow this monster fish with the barnacled sides; this\r\nstrange-looking fish, so high out of water; that goes without fins.\r\nWhat fish can it be? What rippling is that? Dost hear the great monster\r\nbreathe? Why, ’tis sharp at both ends; a tail either way; nor eyes has\r\nit any, nor mouth. What a curious fish! what a comical fish! But more\r\ncomical far, those creatures above, on its hollow back, clinging\r\nthereto like the snaky eels, that cling and slide on the back of the\r\nSword fish, our terrible foe. But what curious eels these are! Do they\r\ndeem themselves pretty as we? No, no; for sure, they behold our limber\r\nfins, our speckled and beautiful scales. Poor, powerless things! How\r\nthey must wish they were we, that roam the flood, and scour the seas\r\nwith a wish. Swim away; merry fins, swim away! Let him drop, that\r\nfellow that halts; make a lane; close in, and fill up. Let him drown,\r\nif he can not keep pace. No laggards for us:—\r\n\r\nWe fish, we fish, we merrily swim,\r\nWe care not for friend nor for foe:\r\n    Our fins are stout,\r\n    Our tails are out,\r\nAs through the seas we go.\r\n\r\nFish, Fish, we are fish with red gills;\r\n    Naught disturbs us, our blood is at zero:\r\nWe are buoyant because of our bags,\r\n    Being many, each fish is a hero.\r\nWe care not what is it, this life\r\n    That we follow, this phantom unknown:\r\nTo swim, it’s exceedingly pleasant,—\r\n    So swim away, making a foam.\r\nThis strange looking thing by our side,\r\n    Not for safety, around it we flee:—\r\nIts shadow’s so shady, that’s all,—\r\n    We only swim under its lee.\r\nAnd as for the eels there above,\r\n    And as for the fowls in the air,\r\nWe care not for them nor their ways,\r\n    As we cheerily glide afar!\r\n\r\nWe fish, we fish, we merrily swim,\r\nWe care not for friend nor for foe:\r\n    Our fins are stout,\r\n    Our tails are out,\r\nAs through the seas we go.\r\n\r\n\r\nBut how now, my fine fish! what alarms your long ranks, and tosses them\r\nall into a hubbub of scales and of foam? Never mind that long knave\r\nwith the spear there, astern. Pipe away, merry fish, and give us a\r\nstave or two more, keeping time with your doggerel tails. But no, no!\r\ntheir singing was over. Grim death, in the shape of a Chevalier, was\r\nafter them.\r\n\r\nHow they changed their boastful tune! How they hugged the vilified\r\nboat! How they wished they were in it, the braggarts! And how they all\r\ntingled with fear!\r\n\r\nFor, now here, now there, is heard a terrific rushing sound under\r\nwater, betokening the onslaught of the dread fish of prey, that with\r\nspear ever in rest, charges in upon the out-skirts of the shoal,\r\ntransfixing the fish on his weapon. Re-treating and shaking them off,\r\nthe Chevalier devours them; then returns to the charge.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJS9YQXJMM5K2N3X1Y8AV","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1HYC04JWXEK48P07WPK","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AM12NY1CW4A1HDXTKRP5Q","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AM12NKTW6Q1QADTTXCMES","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:23.637Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:29.898Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
