Bring forth the maiden!”\r\n\r\nYet, though they tore out my heart’s core, I told them not of my loss.\r\n\r\nThen, anxious, to learn the history of Yillah, all present commanded\r\nthem to divulge it; and breathlessly I heard what follows.\r\n\r\n“Of Yillah, we know only this:—that many moons ago, a mighty canoe,\r\nfull of beings, white, like this murderer Taji, touched at our island\r\nof Amma. Received with wonder, they were worshiped as gods; were\r\nfeasted all over the land. Their chief was a tower to behold; and with\r\nhim, was a being, whose cheeks were of the color of the red coral; her\r\neye, tender as the blue of the sky. Every day our people brought her\r\nofferings of fruit and flowers; which last she would not retain for\r\nherself; but hung them round the neck of her child, Yillah; then only\r\nan infant in her mother’s arms; a bud, nestling close to a flower,\r\nfull-blown. All went well between our people and the gods, till at last\r\nthey slew three of our countrymen, charged with stealing from their\r\ngreat canoe. Our warriors retired to the hills, brooding over revenge.\r\nThree days went by; when by night, descending to the plain, in silence\r\nthey embarked; gained the great vessel, and slaughtered every soul but\r\nYillah. The bud was torn from the flower; and, by our father Aleema,\r\nwas carried to the Valley of Ardair; there set apart as a sacred\r\noffering for Apo, our deity. Many moons passed; and there arose a\r\ntumult, hostile to our sire’s longer holding custody of Yillah; when,\r\nforeseeing that the holy glen would ere long be burst open, he embarked\r\nthe maiden in yonder canoe, to accelerate her sacrifice at the great\r\nshrine of Apo, in Tedaidee.—The rest thou knowest, murderer!”\r\n\r\n“Yillah! Yillah!” now hunted again that sound through my soul. “Oh,\r\nYillah! too late, too late have I learned what thou art!”\r\n\r\nApprised of the disappearance of their former captive, the meager\r\nstrangers exulted; declaring that Apo had taken her to himself. For me,\r\nere long, my blood they would quaff from my skull.\r\n\r\nBut though I shrunk from their horrible threats, I dissembled anew; and\r\nturning, again swore that they raved.\r\n\r\n“Ay!” they retorted, “we rave and raven for you; and your white heart\r\nwill we have!”\r\n\r\nPerceiving the violence of their rage, and persuaded from what I said,\r\nthat much suffering at sea must have maddened them; Borabolla thought\r\nfit to confine them for the present; so that they could not molest me.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJP4DG2JAV4DXXMXSXWQF","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1HYC04JWXEK48P07WPK","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKZKMPJ7MVVHKXMBVCCAH","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:22.132Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:33.830Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
