What in your heart do you think of that\r\nfellow staggering along the dock? Do you not give him a wide berth,\r\nshun him, and account him but little above the brutes that perish? Will\r\nyou throw open your parlors to him; invite him to dinner? or give him a\r\nseason ticket to your pew in church?—No. You will do no such thing; but\r\nat a distance, you will perhaps subscribe a dollar or two for the\r\nbuilding of a hospital, to accommodate sailors already broken down; or\r\nfor the distribution of excellent books among tars who can not read.\r\nAnd the very mode and manner in which such charities are made, bespeak,\r\nmore than words, the low estimation in which sailors are held. It is\r\nuseless to gainsay it; they are deemed almost the refuse and\r\noffscourings of the earth; and the romantic view of them is principally\r\nhad through romances.\r\n\r\nBut can sailors, one of the wheels of this world, be wholly lifted up\r\nfrom the mire? There seems not much chance for it, in the old systems\r\nand programmes of the future, however well-intentioned and sincere; for\r\nwith such systems, the thought of lifting them up seems almost as\r\nhopeless as that of growing the grape in Nova Zembla.\r\n\r\nBut we must not altogether despair for the sailor; nor need those who\r\ntoil for his good be at bottom disheartened, or Time must prove his\r\nfriend in the end; and though sometimes he would almost seem as a\r\nneglected step-son of heaven, permitted to run on and riot out his days\r\nwith no hand to restrain him, while others are watched over and\r\ntenderly cared for; yet we feel and we know that God is the true Father\r\nof all, and that none of his children are without the pale of his care.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nCHAPTER XXX.\r\nREDBURN GROWS INTOLERABLY FLAT AND STUPID OVER SOME OUTLANDISH OLD\r\nGUIDE-BOOKS\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJRM0AKT1HBDD19XJYXXB","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKYJNTS4YP2XXYPXSVN87","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKYJDE1CQ0YF4F0ETJ1NE","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:21.069Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:29.401Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
