For however now inclined to believe that the\r\nbrigantine was untenanted, I desired the light of the sun to place that\r\nfact beyond a misgiving.\r\n\r\nNow, having observed, previous to boarding the vessel, that she lay\r\nrather low in the water, I thought proper to sound the well. But there\r\nbeing no line-and-sinker at hand, I sent Jarl to hunt them up in the\r\narm-chest on the quarter-deck, where doubtless they must be kept.\r\nMeanwhile I searched for the “breaks,” or pump-handles, which, as it\r\nturned out, could not have been very recently used; for they were found\r\nlashed up and down to the main-mast.\r\n\r\nSuddenly Jarl came running toward me, whispering that all doubt was\r\ndispelled;—there were spirits on board, to a dead certainty. He had\r\noverheard a supernatural sneeze. But by this time I was all but\r\nconvinced, that we were alone in the brigantine. Since, if otherwise, I\r\ncould assign no earthly reason for the crew’s hiding away from a couple\r\nof sailors, whom, were they so minded, they might easily have mastered.\r\nAnd furthermore, this alleged disturbance of the atmosphere aloft by a\r\nsneeze, Jarl averred to have taken place in the main-top; directly\r\nunderneath which I was all this time standing, and had heard nothing.\r\nSo complimenting my good Viking upon the exceeding delicacy of his\r\nauriculars, I bade him trouble himself no more with his piratical\r\nghosts and goblins, which existed nowhere but in his own imagination.\r\n\r\nNot finding the line-and-sinker, with the spare end of a bowline we\r\nrigged a substitute; and sounding the well, found nothing to excite our\r\nalarm. Under certain circumstances, however, this sounding a ship’s\r\nwell is a nervous sort of business enough. ’Tis like feeling your own\r\npulse in the last stage of a fever.\r\n\r\nAt the Skyeman’s suggestion, we now proceeded to throw round the\r\nbrigantine’s head on the other tack. For until daylight we desired to\r\nalter the vessel’s position as little as possible, fearful of coming\r\nunawares upon reefs.\r\n\r\nAnd here be it said, that for all his superstitious misgivings about\r\nthe brigantine; his imputing to her something equivalent to a purely\r\nphantom-like nature, honest Jarl was nevertheless exceedingly downright\r\nand practical in all hints and proceedings concerning her. Wherein, he\r\nresembled my Right Reverend friend, Bishop Berkeley—truly, one of your\r\nlords spiritual—who, metaphysically speaking, holding all objects to be\r\nmere optical delusions, was, notwith- standing, extremely\r\nmatter-of-fact in all matters touching matter itself. Besides being\r\npervious to the points of pins, and possessing a palate capable of\r\nappreciating plum-puddings:—which sentence reads off like a pattering\r\nof hailstones.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQXJFB4YHJ7F6QGR48FR","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1HYC04JWXEK48P07WPK","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKY5BMFSYPE5EV55SYSY7","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:20.659Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:27.483Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
