Such proved to be the\r\ncase; for Wilson, rising to his feet again, addressed us as follows:—\r\n\r\n“You see, men, that every preparation has been made to send you to\r\nSydney for trial. The Rosa (a small Australian schooner, lying in the\r\nharbour) will sail for that place in the course of ten days, at\r\nfarthest. The Julia sails on a cruise this day week. Do you still\r\nrefuse duty?”\r\n\r\nWe did.\r\n\r\nHereupon the consul and captain exchanged glances; and the latter\r\nlooked bitterly disappointed.\r\n\r\nPresently I noticed Guy’s eye upon me; and, for the first time, he\r\nspoke, and told me to come near. I stepped forward.\r\n\r\n“Was it not you that was taken off the island?”\r\n\r\n“It was.”\r\n\r\n“It was you then who owe your life to my humanity. Yet this is the\r\ngratitude of a sailor, Mr. Wilson!”\r\n\r\n“Not so, sir.” And I at once gave him to understand that I was\r\nperfectly acquainted with his motives in sending a boat into the bay;\r\nhis crew was reduced, and he merely wished to procure the sailor whom\r\nhe expected to find there. The ship was the means of my deliverance,\r\nand no thanks to the benevolence of its captain.\r\n\r\nDoctor Long Ghost also had a word to say. In two masterly sentences he\r\nsummed up Captain Guy’s character, to the complete satisfaction of\r\nevery seaman present.\r\n\r\nMatters were now growing serious; especially as the sailors became\r\nriotous, and talked about taking the consul and the captain back to the\r\nCalabooza with them.\r\n\r\nThe other judges fidgeted, and loudly commanded silence. It was at\r\nlength restored; when Wilson, for the last time addressing us, said\r\nsomething more about the Rose and Sydney, and concluded by reminding us\r\nthat a week would elapse ere the Julia sailed.\r\n\r\nLeaving these hints to operate for themselves, he dismissed the party,\r\nordering Captain Bob and his friends to escort us back whence we came.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJJFYP3070822RKZMESC7","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKXGRSPT1W4B9NR7D9VJX","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:20.634Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:27.653Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
