On this head, Captain Bob could tell us nothing; no\r\nfurther, at least, than that he still considered himself responsible\r\nfor our safe-keeping. However, he never put us to bed any more; and we\r\nhad everything our own way.\r\n\r\nThe day after the Julia left, the old man came up to us in great\r\ntribulation, saying that the bucket of bread was no longer forthcoming,\r\nand that Wilson had refused to send anything in its place. One and all,\r\nwe took this for a hint to disperse quietly, and go about our business.\r\nNevertheless, we were not to be shaken off so easily; and taking a\r\nmalicious pleasure in annoying our old enemy, we resolved, for the\r\npresent, to stay where we were. For the part he had been acting, we\r\nlearned that the consul was the laughing-stock of all the foreigners\r\nashore, who frequently twitted him upon his hopeful proteges of the\r\nCalabooza Beretanee.\r\n\r\nAs we were wholly without resources, so long as we remained on the\r\nisland no better place than Captain Bob’s could be selected for an\r\nabiding-place. Beside, we heartily loved the old gentleman, and could\r\nnot think of leaving him; so, telling him to give no thought as to\r\nwherewithal we should be clothed and fed, we resolved, by extending and\r\nsystematizing our foraging operations, to provide for ourselves.\r\n\r\nWe were greatly assisted by a parting legacy of Jermin’s. To him we\r\nwere indebted for having all our chests sent ashore, and everything\r\nleft therein. They were placed in the custody of a petty chief living\r\nnear by, who was instructed by the consul not to allow them to be taken\r\naway; but we might call and make our toilets whenever we pleased.\r\n\r\nWe went to see Mahinee, the old chief; Captain Bob going along, and\r\nstoutly insisting upon having the chattels delivered up. At last this\r\nwas done; and in solemn procession the chests were borne by the natives\r\nto the Calabooza. Here, we disposed them about quite tastefully; and\r\nmade such a figure that, in the eyes of old Bob and his friends, the\r\nCalabooza Beretanee was by far the most sumptuously furnished saloon in\r\nTahiti.\r\n\r\nIndeed, so long as it remained thus furnished, the native courts of the\r\ndistrict were held there; the judge, Mahinee, and his associates,\r\nsitting upon one of the chests, and the culprits and spectators thrown\r\nat full length upon the ground, both inside of the building and under\r\nthe shade of the trees without; while, leaning over the stocks as from\r\na gallery, the worshipful crew of the Julia looked on, and canvassed\r\nthe proceedings.\r\n\r\nI should have mentioned before that, previous to the vessel’s\r\ndeparture, the men had bartered away all the clothing they could\r\npossibly spare; but now, it was resolved to be more provident.\r\n\r\nThe contents of the chests were of the most miscellaneous\r\ndescription:—sewing utensils, marling-spikes, strips of calico, bits of\r\nrope, jack-knives; nearly everything, in short, that a seaman could\r\nthink of. But of wearing apparel, there was little but old frocks,\r\nremnants of jackets, and legs of trousers, with now and then the foot\r\nof a stocking.\r\n\r\nThese, however, were far from being valueless; for, among the poorer\r\nTahitians, everything European is highly esteemed. They come from\r\n“Beretanee, Fenooa Pararee” (Britain, Land of Wonders), and that is\r\nenough.\r\n\r\nThe chests themselves were deemed exceedingly precious, especially\r\nthose with unfractured looks, which would absolutely click, and enable\r\nthe owner to walk off with the key. Scars, however, and bruises, were\r\nconsidered great blemishes. One old fellow, smitten with the doctor’s\r\nlarge mahogany chest (a well-filled one, by the bye), and finding\r\ninfinite satisfaction in merely sitting thereon, was detected in the\r\nact of applying a healing ointment to a shocking scratch which impaired\r\nthe beauty of the lid.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKGBZH6QJHP5HRD1BZT16","peer_type":"subsection","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKY4T2GGFMCJZQ0VCPVRP","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:20.625Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:28.197Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
