Nearly all of them had made frequent\r\nvoyages to Liverpool.\r\n\r\nNot long after anchoring, several boats came off; and from one of them\r\nstept a neatly-dressed and very respectable-looking woman, some thirty\r\nyears of age, I should think, carrying a bundle. Coming forward among\r\nthe sailors, she inquired for Max the Dutchman, who immediately was\r\nforthcoming, and saluted her by the mellifluous appellation of _Sally._\r\n\r\nNow during the passage, Max in discoursing to me of Liverpool, had\r\noften assured me, that that city had the honor of containing a spouse\r\nof his; and that in all probability, I would have the pleasure of\r\nseeing her. But having heard a good many stories about the bigamies of\r\nseamen, and their having wives and sweethearts in every port, the round\r\nworld over; and having been an eye-witness to a nuptial parting between\r\nthis very Max and a lady in New York; I put down this relation of his,\r\nfor what I thought it might reasonably be worth. What was my\r\nastonishment, therefore, to see this really decent, civil woman coming\r\nwith a neat parcel of Max’s shore clothes, all washed, plaited, and\r\nironed, and ready to put on at a moment’s warning.\r\n\r\nThey stood apart a few moments giving loose to those transports of\r\npleasure, which always take place, I suppose, between man and wife\r\nafter long separations.\r\n\r\nAt last, after many earnest inquiries as to how he had behaved himself\r\nin New York; and concerning the state of his wardrobe; and going down\r\ninto the forecastle, and inspecting it in person, Sally departed;\r\nhaving exchanged her bundle of clean clothes for a bundle of soiled\r\nones, and this was precisely what the New York wife had done for Max,\r\nnot thirty days previous.\r\n\r\nSo long as we laid in port, Sally visited the Highlander daily; and\r\napproved herself a neat and expeditious getter-up of duck frocks and\r\ntrowsers, a capital tailoress, and as far as I could see, a very\r\nwell-behaved, discreet, and reputable woman.\r\n\r\nBut from all I had seen of her, I should suppose Meg, the New York\r\nwife, to have been equally well-behaved, discreet, and reputable; and\r\nequally devoted to the keeping in good order Max’s wardrobe.\r\n\r\nAnd when we left England at last, Sally bade Max good-by, just as Meg\r\nhad done; and when we arrived at New York, Meg greeted Max precisely as\r\nSally had greeted him in Liverpool. Indeed, a pair of more amiable\r\nwives never belonged to one man; they never quarreled, or had so much\r\nas a difference of any kind; the whole broad Atlantic being between\r\nthem; and Max was equally polite and civil to both. For many years, he\r\nhad been going Liverpool and New York voyages, plying between wife and\r\nwife with great regularity, and sure of receiving a hearty domestic\r\nwelcome on either side of the ocean.\r\n\r\nThinking this conduct of his, however, altogether wrong and every way\r\nimmoral, I once ventured to express to him my opinion on the subject.\r\nBut I never did so again. He turned round on me, very savagely; and\r\nafter rating me soundly for meddling in concerns not my own, concluded\r\nby asking me triumphantly, whether _old King Sol,_ as he called the son\r\nof David, did not have a whole frigate-full of wives; and that being\r\nthe case, whether he, a poor sailor, did not have just as good a right\r\nto have two? “What was not wrong then, is right now,” said Max; “so,\r\nmind your eye, Buttons, or I’ll crack your pepper-box for you!”\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQSBEW41AMVEGVANV2QC","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKXY86D7Q3C01FNX9P04B","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:20.425Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:28.686Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
