Up you go!” he added,\r\nflourishing the rope’s end.\r\n\r\nHarry looked round among the grinning tars with a glance of terrible\r\nindignation and agony; and then settling his eye on me, and seeing\r\nthere no hope, but even an admonition of obedience, as his only\r\nresource, he made one bound into the rigging, and was up at the\r\nmain-top in a trice. I thought a few more springs would take him to the\r\ntruck, and was a little fearful that in his desperation he might then\r\njump overboard; for I had heard of delirious greenhorns doing such\r\nthings at sea, and being lost forever. But no; he stopped short, and\r\nlooked down from the top. Fatal glance! it unstrung his every fiber;\r\nand I saw him reel, and clutch the shrouds, till the mate shouted out\r\nfor him not to squeeze the tar out of the ropes. “Up you go, sir.” But\r\nHarry said nothing.\r\n\r\n“You Max,” cried the mate to the Dutch sailor, “spring after him, and\r\nhelp him; you understand?”\r\n\r\nMax went up the rigging hand over hand, and brought his red head with a\r\nbump against the base of Harry’s back. Needs must when the devil\r\ndrives; and higher and higher, with Max bumping him at every step, went\r\nmy unfortunate friend. At last he gained the royal yard, and the thin\r\nsignal halyards—, hardly bigger than common twine—were flying in the\r\nwind. “Unreeve!” cried the mate.\r\n\r\nI saw Harry’s arm stretched out—his legs seemed shaking in the rigging,\r\neven to us, down on deck; and at last, thank heaven! the deed was done.\r\n\r\nHe came down pale as death, with bloodshot eyes, and every limb\r\nquivering. From that moment he never put foot in rattlin; never mounted\r\nabove the bulwarks; and for the residue of the voyage, at least, became\r\nan altered person.\r\n\r\nAt the time, he went to the mate—since he could not get speech of the\r\ncaptain—and conjured him to intercede with Riga, that his name might be\r\nstricken off from the list of the ship’s company, so that he might make\r\nthe voyage as a steerage passenger; for which privilege, he bound\r\nhimself to pay, as soon as he could dispose of some things of his in\r\nNew York, over and above the ordinary passage-money. But the mate gave\r\nhim a blunt denial; and a look of wonder at his effrontery. Once a\r\nsailor on board a ship, and _always_ a sailor for that voyage, at\r\nleast; for within so brief a period, no officer can bear to associate\r\non terms of any thing like equality with a person whom he has ordered\r\nabout at his pleasure.\r\n\r\nHarry then told the mate solemnly, that he might do what he pleased,\r\nbut go aloft again he _could_ not, and _would_ not. He would do any\r\nthing else but that.\r\n\r\nThis affair sealed Harry’s fate on board of the Highlander; the crew\r\nnow reckoned him fair play for their worst jibes and jeers, and he led\r\na miserable life indeed.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJT56E0P2PPTSG89EMH92","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKXT6G9QHJF1QPPMPNS04","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKXT66HJPVF9A4E1X89KQ","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:20.294Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:33.648Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
