But he cursorily observed, that in his\r\nblue-water opinion, Willamilla was next to uninhabitable, all view of\r\nthe sea being intercepted.\r\n\r\nAnd here it may be well to relate a comical blunder on the part of\r\nhonest Jarl; concerning which, Samoa, the savage, often afterward\r\ntwitted him; as indicating a rusticity, and want of polish in his\r\nbreeding. It rather originated, however, in his not heeding the\r\nconventionalities of the strange people among whom he was thrown.\r\n\r\nThe anecdote is not an epic; but here it is.\r\n\r\nReclining in our arbor, we breakfasted upon a marble slab; so\r\nfrost-white, and flowingly traced with blue veins, that it seemed a\r\nlittle lake sheeted over with ice: Diana’s virgin bosom congéaled.\r\n\r\nBefore each guest was a richly carved bowl and gourd, fruit and wine\r\nfreighted also the empty hemisphere of a small nut, the purpose of\r\nwhich was a problem. Now, King Jarl scorned to admit the slightest\r\ndegree of under-breeding in the matter of polite feeding. So nothing\r\nwas a problem to him. At once reminded of the morsel of Arvaroot in his\r\nmouth, a substitute for another sort of sedative then unattainable, he\r\nwas instantly illuminated concerning the purpose of the nut; and very\r\ncomplacently introduced each to the other; in the innocence of his\r\nignorance making no doubt that he had acquitted himself with\r\ndiscretion; the little hemisphere plainly being intended as a place of\r\ntemporary deposit for the Arva of the guests.\r\n\r\nThe company were astounded: Samoa more than all. King Jarl, meanwhile,\r\nlooking at all present with the utmost serenity. At length, one of the\r\nhorrified attendants, using two sticks for a forceps, disappeared with\r\nthe obnoxious nut, Upon which, the meal proceeded.\r\n\r\nThis attendant was not seen again for many days; which gave rise to the\r\nsupposition, that journeying to the sea-side, he had embarked for some\r\ndistant strand; there, to bury out of sight the abomination with which\r\nhe was freighted.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJW8349DS5SCAK3WYAK86","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1HYC04JWXEK48P07WPK","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKXGFDDBW22XZMYYBHCM3","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:19.983Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:32.298Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
